Frank Kimmel Seeking Dirt Track Revenge in DuQuoin
Looking for First Win of Season at
DuQuoin State Fairgrounds
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (September 2, 2010)
-DuQuoin's one-mile dirt oval is no
ordinary racetrack, known as the "magic mile," it is a place filled with rich
racing history. Boasting an impressive
list of racing legends among its former winners, the DuQuoin dirt mile's list
of champions include names such as Jerry Unser, Fred Lorenzen, AJ Foyt, Rusty
Wallace, Tony Stewart, Ken Schrader and nine-time ARCA Racing Series champion,
Frank Kimmel. A win at the magic mile means your name is among some of the
greatest in auto racing history. As ARCA's
king of dirt track racing, Kimmel looks to add his name to the winner's list
for a sixth time at the storied track in Monday afternoon's Labor Day classic,
the Southern Illinois 100.
When Kimmel and his Ansell/Menards
team roll into DuQuoin's "magic mile" Monday morning, they are looking for more
than just a solid finish. They are looking to make up for what could have been in
the dirt at Springfield, when they watched a potential win slip through their
gloves in a turn two wreck. They are looking to retake the points lead in their
battle for a 10thARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards
championship, and they are looking to get Kimmel Racing back into victory lane
after a two year hiatus, the longest since Kimmel captured his first-career ARCA
victory at Toledo in 1993.
While Kimmel is certainly one of the
favorites heading into DuQuoin, the Ansell/Menards team will have to race
without their favorite dirt track car, "The Don." After the wreck at Springfield
only two weeks
ago, Kimmel and team were not able to repair "The Don" and are coming to the
DuQuoin Fairgrounds with a different car.
"I am pretty optimistic about our
car for DuQuoin," said Kimmel. "The car, No. 249, is a really good racecar. It
actually scales out better; the weight is distributed a little bit better on
this car than it is on The Don. We have
used this car at Salem and Toledo this year, and it ran really well at both
places. It's a good racecar. I don't
think we'll have any issues with it. We are coming with a little bit of a
different setup than we have in the past, just because of the way the track has
been here in recent years. I'm pretty optimistic that we'll run really well."
With five
wins, 11 top-five and 12 top-10 finishes in his last 14 races at DuQuoin,
Kimmel boasts one of the most prolific records at the magic mile. He will look to
add to that record on Monday,
September 6 in the Southern Illinois 500 presented by Federated Car Care. ARCA Racing
Series practice is scheduled from
9:00-10:00 a.m. CDT (10:00-11:00 EST), followed by Menards Pole Qualifying
presented by Ansell at 11:00 a.m. The green flag is set to drop on the stars of
the ARCA Racing Series at 1:00 p.m. (2:00 p.m. EST) with live audio and timing
and scoring featured on ARCARacing.com.
"Kimmel's
Top-10"
In anticipation of his 10thChampionship, Frank Kimmel gives a look at his "Top 10"
before each ARCA Racing
Series event. Boasting one of the most illustrious
dirt track records in ARCA Racing Series history, Kimmel is not short on
stories when it comes to racing on the dirt. This week Kimmel takes a look at his
favorite dirt track moments throughout his ARCA Racing Series career.
10. 2001- Tony Stewart drove one our backup
cars at DuQuoin, and I beat him by a car length for the win.
9. 2002-
Tony Stewart drove one of Andy Petree's cars at DuQuoin. We battled side by side
for the lead for over
20 laps. I ended up edging out Stewart
by a fender. Both Tony and I went on to
win our series championships.
7. 2008-
We won both Springfield and DuQuoin this year, while earning our first wins for
Kimmel Racing.
8. 1998-
We won at the 5/8 mile West Virginia Motor Speedway in Parkersburg, W.V. by
lapping the entire field.
6. 2008- Broke the track record at Springfield
5. 1999- I wound up on
the driver's side in the hay bales between turns one and two while racing Bill
Baird for the lead. We ended up pushing
the car back on its wheels and finishing the race.
4. 2003- We fought an overheating issue with the
car and were still able to challenge Tony Stewart, who drove his own car, for
the lead late in the race. We ended up
finishing fifth.
3. 2000- I won my first one-mile dirt race at
Springfield.
2. 2001- I won my first pole on the dirt at Springfield. We ended up winning the
race as well.
1. 2008- Prior to the race at DuQuoin, Patrick
Sheltra and I made a pact that if either one of us won we would both jump in
the infield lake. I won and Patrick
finished second- we both went for a swim in the lake.

Kimmel on Battling for a 10th Championship:
"It doesn't change the way we come to race at all. I've told
a lot of people this year that it is better to be 500 or 600 points ahead, but
if not, this is a pretty cool way that the points are going right now. You really
can't think about the points, you
have to go out and race every single lap as hard as you can run, because all
the other guys are doing that same thing. The next five races the guy who is
the most consistent and runs the fastest is the guy that is going to win the
points. We have got to be the fastest
car every week, lead some laps and hopefully get us some wins."
