Keith Steele - TORC Chicagoland Race Report
Steele Learning to Use the Added
Power @ Chicagoland
Madison, WI
(August 17, 2010) - The addition of the Wolverine Performance PRO-2WD
powerplant to the Monster Energy Kumho Tire Chevy makes the truck drive and
feel like a completely different hot rod. This was evident as Keith Steele took
to the stadium style track at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois.
The .8 mile
long track was a very technical layout with a series whoops and moguls combined
with a large tabletop jump on the infield section and six additional high speed
jumps spaced throughout the outer portion of the track. The track was extremely
demanding and several drivers had a hard time catching their breath during the
eighteen lap feature races.
The
combination of the short technical layout of the track and the added horsepower
from the Wolverine powerplant saw the Steele Off-Road Racing Team make chassis changes
after the Wednesday afternoon practice session. When the team
ran the same truck in the Limited 2 class, chassis changes were done in small
increments. The new powerplant has caused the team to approach races tracks in
different ways, sometimes that larger chassis changes are the norm and not the
exception.
The unique
midweek Traxxas TORC Series presented by AMSOIL event was learning experience
Keith Steele and his team. Even though the team ran much of the 2010 season in
PRO-2 with a smaller Limited 2 powerplant, seat time with the larger powerplant
is needed to get both driver and race truck competing with the top drivers in
the division. With that in mind, Keith Steele finished tenth on Wednesday and
eighth on Thursday in the twelve truck field.
"As you
know I am still learning how to drive this truck and the team is still learning
how to tune the chassis to different types of conditions, but all in all we gathered
a ton of information without tearing up the truck," remarked Keith Steele. "We
are heading to Crandon next week for the season finale and I think you will see
a definite improvement in our team's performance when we get on the track. Our
goal is to get a top 5 finish during the final weekend of the season."
The final
TORC race of the season is September 4-5 in Crandon, Wisconsin.
