ASA MEMBER TRACK STANDINGS COULD CHANGE THE JOE GIBBS DRIVEN RACING OIL ASA MEMBER
TRACK NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP PICTURE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
AMERICAN SPEED ASSOCIATION PR
DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Thursday, August 26, 2010) - The next three to four weeks will
be interesting in the chase for the 2010 Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member
Track National Championship. The big reason is that many ASA Member Tracks have
a tight points battle which could affect who will go on to challenge for the National
Championship, as the National Champion has to be their track's 2010 champion.
Rodney Cook has been the top driver for the last month in the National Championship
picture with the successful season that he is having. He was also enjoying a comfortable
points lead at Ace Speedway in Elon, NC. That was until recently where they went
to a chase style format and reset their points for the final four events. Cook
currently has a 16-point lead over Dustin Rumley in the Late Model standings with
two event remaining this season.
Dells Raceway Park in Wisconsin Dells, WI has been well represented by Corey Jankowski
all season long. That was until last week. Jankowski is in a very tight points
battle with the top-five competitors who are separated by 35 points. In fact,
the top-four are separated by 11 points. Going into this weekend's action, Davey
Pennel, who is 16-years-old and was recently invited to the Richard Petty Driver
Search in September, has a two point lead over Rich Schumann Jr. Jankowski is
six points behind Pennel and Mike Lichtfeld is fourth, 11 points back. Michael
Ehde and Cardell Potter are tied for fifth, 35 points back. They also have two
events remaining on their 2010 schedule.
Out west at Orange Show Speedway in San Bernardino, CA. Ron Daniel has a seven point
lead over Jeff Peterson in their Late Model standings. Peterson has been on a hot
streak lately. In the last five events, Peterson has three wins and two-second
place finishes. They will be in action this weekend and then two events after that.
Orange Show does have a unique situation as their last points event for their Late
Model division is on October 2nd. This is past the September 26th deadline for
the Joe Gibbs Driven Oil ASA Member Track National Championship. The driver who
is the points leader at the September 26th deadline will be the track representative
towards the National Championship. It is possible that their representative and
their 2010 track champion could be two different drivers.
At Rocky Mountain Raceways in West Valley City, UT, Bryan Wordelman has a 115-point
lead over Jason Aposhian in the Modified standings. They are off this weekend but
will be back on September 4th and battle until their championship is decided on
September 18th.
The ASA Modifieds will be in action on Saturday night at Meridian Speedway in Meridian,
ID where Thomas Hill has a 20-point lead over Shelby Stroebel in the standings.
Jeffrey Hill is in third only 56 points behind his brother.
Down south at Thunderhill Raceway in Kyle, TX, the ASA A-Line Super Stocks will
be in action on Saturday night. Clint LaFont, who finished second in last year's
Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship has an eight
point lead over Mason Teague in the track standings. The last time the two battled
on the track, it was Teague taking the win with LaFont in second.
Up in the Midwest at Madison International Speedway in Oregon, WI, Mother Nature
has been winning over the last couple of weeks. Because of that, they have extended
their racing season by one week. The Late Model division will be running twin 25-lap
features this Friday night and twin 40-lap features next Friday as part of their
Season Championship night. Jeremy Miller holds a four-point lead over Bobby Wilberg
in the standings. Scott Broughton is in third, 39 points back.
Ken Dickinson currently has a 41-point lead over Mike Slone in the Late Model standings
at Lebanon I-44 Speedway in Lebanon, MO. They will be in action this Saturday night
with the season championships scheduled for September 4th.
State Park Speedway in Wausau, WI will be in action this Thursday night. Chris
Weinkauf holds a 59-point lead over Jeremy Lepak in the Late Model standings.
"This is exactly what we hoped for when we developed our format for the Joe Gibbs
Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship," Dennis Huth, ASA President
said. "The fans at our ASA Member Tracks are being entertained by some of the best
racing we have seen in a long time, and you can see that by how close the point
standings are at many of our tracks. You need to be there to see the action in
person."
You can review the standings at www.speednetdirect.com by clicking on the ASA Member
Track logo at the top of the page.
The goal of the ASA Short Track National Championship is to activate a measuring
system which takes into account many variables - such as field size, inversion,
wins and number of races in a season - and create a level playing field to determine
who is the 'best-of-the-best' of the ASA Member Track Champions nationwide.
Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil, sponsor of the American Speed Association National
Short Track National Championship, is the same oil developed and used by Joe Gibbs
Racing. The team sells the oil so racers across the country can have access to the
latest technology in racing lubricants.
Joe Gibbs Racing is one of the premier organizations in NASCAR, currently fielding
three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams, two NASCAR Nationwide Series teams and a driver
development program. Based in Huntersville, N.C., and owned by Joe Gibbs - a three-time
Super Bowl winner as head coach of the Washington Redskins and a member of the Pro
Football Hall of Fame - JGR has competed in NASCAR since 1992, winning three Cup
