Springfield IL August 21, 2010-Track Enterprises regrets to annouce that the 50th Tony Bettenhausen 100 USAC SIlver Crown event scheduled for today at the Illinois State Fairgrounds has been postponed due to rain.
Five inches of rain was recorded in private guages near the Illinois State Fairgrounds and the heavy storms that began early in the evening on Friday turned the "World's Fastest One Mile Dirt Track" into a quagmire leaving at least three inches of mud at the top of the gumbo surface. "Mother Nature left us a mess overnight", said promoter Bob Sargent. "We had to tow vehicles out of the infield and the infield was unsuitable for the large haulers the teams use." "In addition, the crews were unable to remove the setup from the concert that was rained out last night due to the track condition." "There was simply no way to get the surface in a raceable and safe condition today and we will look for dates later in the year, if possible, to reschedue the 50th Bettenhausen 100." "If we can secure a date that works for everyone we may be able to give ou fans a great late summer or early fall weekend."
Satuday marks just the third time since 1969 that the Tony Bettenhausen 100 has been postponed due to rain. In 1980 rain postponed the event until the following Monday, rain again struck and the event was run on the first Tuesday following the fair. In 1996 rain begen during qualifications and the race postponed until September.
