MCLENATHAN WILL START THIRD IN BRAINERD
BRAINERD, Minn. (Aug. 14, 2010) - Cory McClenathan qualified the FRAM Top
Fuel Dragster in the No. 3 spot for the 29th annual NHRA Nationals at
Brainerd International Raceway, the final event of the NHRA Full Throttle
Drag Racing Series "regular" season. The Countdown to 1 playoffs will be
contested by the top 10 in points in the final six events of the year.
McClenathan recorded his quickest pass of 3.848 seconds at 307.51 mph in
today's second session, which followed his single run on Friday (one run was
cancelled because of rain) of 3.888/315.05. That pass set the top speed of
the event and placed him No. 2 at the time.
His final try today resulted in a tire-smoking 4.547/169.49. He will face
Chris Karamasines in the opening round of Sunday's eliminations.
"We came in here with that same theory of, 'Letıs get qualified, let's run
good and we can try something later on,' and thatıs what we were able to
do," said McClenathan, who stands third in points. "We tried something
different in that last round and the FRAM boys said it worked pretty well. I
donıt know if we can take that into tomorrowıs racing, but maybe we can use
it in the future.
"We're qualified No. 3 and have set ourselves up for a good Sunday. Thatıs a
big thing. And now it looks like the weather is going to take a turn
tomorrow; itıs going to be cooler. Thatıll make a big difference. The crew
chiefs are going to have to put on their thinking caps.
"As far as the driver goes, there's nothing for me to do but get in and get
on the gas. At the same time, it will definitely throw some fits out here
for the crew chiefs. Theyıll be working hard to figure out the track
tomorrow. Weıll probably set ourselves back in the pack in the morning and
see what those few cars in front of us do and go from there.²
