Eaton Continues to Power ‘Engines of the Year’
SOUTHFIELD, Mich.--For the second consecutive year, diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation scored well in the International Engine of the Year Award, which was presented in Stuttgart at the end of June. Eaton’s supercharger technology, coupled with a turbocharger, helped Volkswagen’s 1.4L TSI Twincharger four-cylinder engine win the internationally renowned award.
“We’re pleased that a panel of international auto experts has recognized our customers for the performance and efficiency of these engines”
In addition to winning top honors, Eaton also supplied components on six of the 10 other winning international engines, including:
- Intake valves on the BMW 1.6L Turbo Diesel, 2.0L Twin Turbo Diesel and 4.0L V8 engines
- Exhaust valves on the BMW 3.0L Twin Turbo inline 6 cylinder engine and Fiat 1.4L Multi-Air Turbo engine
“We’re pleased that a panel of international auto experts has recognized our customers for the performance and efficiency of these engines,?? said Darryl Niven, general manager, Eaton Supercharger Division. “The winning Volkswagen engine that utilizes our supercharger technology proves once again that it is possible to replace larger engines with smaller, more efficient engines that improve fuel economy and reduce emissions without sacrificing power and performance.??
Sponsored by UKIP Media and Events Ltd., the award is given to the automaker whose engine is judged to provide the best fuel economy, noise reduction, smoothness, performance and drivability.
Entries were judged by a panel of 72 journalists from 35 countries globally. Engines are required to be fitted in 2010/2011 model year vehicles sold in multiple countries.
The Volkswagen Twincharger combines a compact Eaton supercharger with a single-stage turbocharger to boost horsepower and torque, while improving fuel efficiency to 45.5 miles per gallon. Its quick response eliminates the lag of many competing systems. The engine, used in the automaker’s Golf, Jetta, Scirocco, Touran, Tiguan and Seat Ibiza Cupra models, has won several international engine award competitions since it first appeared in 2006 production vehicles.
