TAKING A CHAMPION TO THE NEXT LEVEL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
American Speed Association PR
DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Tuesday, August 3, 2010) - In just a little over two months,
one driver is going to get a phone call from ASA President Dennis Huth. That phone
call is going to tell that driver about a unique opportunity that only they will
have this year, a tryout with Joe Gibbs Racing.
That call will be going to the 2010 Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track
National Champion. Right now, at several ASA Member Tracks across the United States,
several drivers are competing for their track championship to become eligible for
the National Championship.
The 2010 champion will be the third one get this unique opportunity in the history
of the national championship. In 2008, Cary Stapp won the track championship at
Thunderhill Raceway, an ASA Member Track in Kyle, TX got his opportunity and last
year Tommy Cloce won the title after he captured the track championship at Adirondack
Speedway, an ASA Member Track in Beaver Falls, NY.
"This is a very unique opportunity for our competitors who race weekly at one of
our ASA Member Tracks," Huth said. "It is an opportunity that I would say is priceless.
You are working with one of the top teams in racing today, Joe Gibbs Racing. They
are seriously giving the National Champion a tryout by driving one of their cars
and working with one of their teams. When you go for the tryout, it's just the
champion they are working with, no one else."
The 2010 champion will be flown to North Carolina where they will go right to Joe
Gibbs Racing and get fitted in the car they will be driving in for the tryout.
They will then get a tour of both Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series shops and have
a one-on-one meeting with JD Gibbs, President of Joe Gibbs Racing and possibly Coach
Gibbs as well.
They will then travel to a nearby track for a full day of testing. This will include
communicating with the crew chief and team on the car setup, just like they do at
their own tests with the goal of achieving the best lap times possible. The 2010
champion is the driver for that day.
"The last two months of this year's championship chase will be exciting to watch
as many drivers would love to have an opportunity like this," Huth said. "When
we started the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship,
we wanted to have something unique as the top prize. Many will offer cash when
many competitors want an opportunity to expand their racing career. We are proud
to offer this to our ASA Member Track competitors."
For Joe Gibbs Racing, it's an opportunity to meet a local competitor and see first
hand the talent that competes each week at an ASA Member Track. "I have had the
great opportunity of meeting with the past two champions and have been very impressed,"
JD Gibbs said. "We realize that there are many talented drivers competing at ASA
Member Tracks all across the United States with many hoping to get an opportunity
that we along with ASA are providing again to this year's National Champion. I
cannot wait to meet the 2010 champion later this year."
You can review the standings at www.speednetdirect.com by clicking on the ASA Member
Track logo at the top of the page.
The goal of the ASA Short Track National Championship is to activate a measuring
system which takes into account many variables - such as field size, inversion,
wins and number of races in a season - and create a level playing field to determine
who is the 'best-of-the-best' of the ASA Member Track Champions nationwide.
Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil, sponsor of the American Speed Association National
Short Track National Championship, is the same oil developed and used by Joe Gibbs
Racing. The team sells the oil so racers across the country can have access to the
latest technology in racing lubricants.
Joe Gibbs Racing is one of the premier organizations in NASCAR, currently fielding
three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams, two NASCAR Nationwide Series teams and a driver
development program. Based in Huntersville, N.C., and owned by Joe Gibbs - a three-time
Super Bowl winner as head coach of the Washington Redskins and a member of the Pro
Football Hall of Fame - JGR has competed in NASCAR since 1992, winning three Cup
Series championships and more than 80 NASCAR races, including three Brickyard 400s
and the 1993 Daytona 500.
The ASA Member Track program is comprised of dirt and asphalt short tracks along
with road courses around the United States, as well as a variety of regional and
national touring series. For more information, call (386) 258-2221 or send an e-mail
