1ST LUCAS OIL NORTH-SOUTH SHOOT-OUT!
MODIFIEDS RETURN TO TOYOTA SPEEDWAY
Saturday Night: August 7, 2010
Irwindale, Calif. - - It’s been a few years since the motoring Modifieds made fast laps at Toyota Speedway. Too many years, in fact, for a lot of fans who loved the way that these semi-open-wheel speed demons circulated the Irwindale half-mile at times that were always breathtakingly close to the magic 100 miles-per-hour lap.
So the good news is that the touring pros of the Lucas Oil Modified Series are set converge from both ends of the state at Toyota Speedway on Saturday August 7 for a special race that’s aimed at bringing back some of the action and excitement that’s been missing since the “Grand Ams” (as they were known then) last raced a few years back at Irwindale.
The 1st LUCAS OIL MODIFIED NORTH-SOUTH SHOOT-OUT
There’s a nice, round $2,000 up to win this one, so, even though the race is not counted as a points race in the 2010 Lucas Modified Series, the payday is respectable and the bragging rights are priceless. “We’re very excited about hosting the Lucas Modifieds here at the Speedway, this is a great touring series, with many names running in it that are quite well known to our fans,” said track GM/VP Bob DeFazio. “We’re looking forward to having the Lucas Modifieds back with us for several more races in the future.”
The Irwindale main event for the Mods will be a full 50-lap race (with yellow flag Laps NOT counted) which will match up for duration with the 75-lappers mains that the fast Lucas cars usually do on the shorter (1/4 and 1/3-mile) tracks they compete on up and down the state.
These unique-looking machines feature a full tube chassis and flat metal panels covering (most) of the frame work. A set of open front wheels is what really sets these machines off from their more sleek stock car brethren. Sharp-eyed fans can watch every degree of driver steering input as they balance these very high-powered, very narrow-tired race cars on the big, progressively-banked half-mile oval.
All of the Modifieds’ racing chassis are built to strict set of rules and many of the Modifieds run on Methanol or E85 which packs more power per pound than the highest of racing “high test” gasoline. All cars must run on the same tire (a Hoosier 700) which is not really the softest nor widest tire on the tire rack. That leads to some serious steering needed to go fast and stay on the racetrack with one of these race cars. Everyone has the same tire, the best “tire manger” (driver) has a great big advantage here.
IN OTHER NEWS: Fans are reminded to have a light lunch and get out to the track early for $1.00 Hot Dog and $1.00 Soft Drink Night. Bring the kids (under 12 year-olds are FREE) and a healthy appetite (for track dogs AND great NASCAR racing!).
Add a package that contains the competitive NASCAR Auto Club Late Models, the manic Justice Brothers Mini Stocks, the exciting Echo Equipment Legends Cars, the jumping Jan’s Towing Bandoleros, and a (wait for it …) trick TRAILER RACE!
“Too much show?” Nope, just another great night of cool AUTO-TAINMENT at Toyota Speedway!
This will be a special night with the debut of the exciting Lucas Oil Modifieds to the fast Irwindale half-mile. Which makes the 5:45PM King Taco On-Track Autograph Party even more fun and interesting … Meet all of these new drivers and get a close-up look at some super-mean motorcars! This very competitive series is set to bring some new thrills to the variable banking.
As usual, gates open at 4PM and the fun starts (get your face painted, have some kettle corn, grab an ice cold lemonade or adult beverage and enjoy the build-up to the evening’s action.) and racing starts at 7. In between, with a live band, the car club car show, and the kid jumpers, it’s all fun for all.
