CAPPS ADVANCES TO QUARTERS IN DENVER
MORRISON, Colo. (July 25, 2010) - It appeared that Ron Capps and the NAPA
AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car team were poised to reach their
straight final round of the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series,
after defeating Tony Pedregon in the opening stanza at the Mopar Mile-High
NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway.
After ousting Pedregon with a 4.204-second elapsed time at 299.73 mph, the
second quickest of the round (and first of the round winners), Capps went
after second-in-points Robert Hight in the quarterfinal. He again impressed
by posting the quickest lap of that round, a 4.235/296.11, but Hight nipped
him at the finish line by a mere four feet with a slower but winning
4.251/293.54 pass.
Capps held on to fifth place in the class point standings, with one event
remaining before the Countdown to 1 playoffs kick in at the U.S. Nationals
in Indianapolis on Labor Day, for the final six events of the year.
"Great weekend," said Capps, the defending event champion. "We ran low ET of
the round, but I'm sick to my stomach to lose a race like that on a
holeshot. I didn't have a bad light (.100 to .074); you just have to be
better to get up and race Robert and (crew chief) Jimmy Prock.
"(NAPA crew chief) John Medlen, Ace (Ed McCulloch, team consultant) and all
the NAPA guys obviously gave me a great car. The one very cool thing is
we're working so well as a team. I can't tell you how exciting it is to come
to the pit area and have the talent we have in a crew chief like John
Medlen. Such a smart guy, such a fun guy to be around, and to have Ed
McCulloch as well making calls with John is confidence-building.
"It's sort of like going to battle and having both Generals Patton and
MacArthur leading your battalion. It's a very, very rare thing for a driver
to have that much talent in car tuners and leaders. This NAPA team is such a
well-oiled machine right now. I am so happy.
"The NAPA guys once again did a great job. We're focusing right now on one
more race and the Countdown is going to start. We're very energized." Capps
is seeking his first Funny Car national championship, after three runner-up
finishes in his 16-year career.
The next event is the 29th annual NHRA Nationals in Brainerd, Minn., Aug.
12-15.
