F1 Racing: Schumacher's return has 'backfired'

Michael Schumacher's return to Formula 1 this season has "backfired", according to outspoken F1 pundit, Eddie Irvine, in the newly-relaunched F1 Racing magazine.

Northern Irishman Irvine, Schuey's former team-mate at Ferrari, says that the only thing the seven-times F1 World Champion is getting out of his return to the sport with Mercedes GP is the attention he craves.

"Michael took his gamble, and it's backfired a bit," he says in an exclusive interview for the August issue of the magazine. "But he's making money, he's back getting noticed, and people are talking about him again.

"When he was turning up at circuits after he'd retired, he was like a spare prick at a wedding - there was absolutely no reason for him to be there.

"He probably missed the attention, and the racing. At the end of the day, he was doing motorcycle racing for that competitive thing, and he was useless. That didn't make sense at all."

The August issue of F1 Racing, containing the full interview with Irvine, is available now, priced £4.60. The magazine has undergone a full revamp after consultation with readers, with the August issue being the first to feature the design overhaul.

The September issue will feature an in-depth look at the reasons behind Schumacher's struggle, along with a celebration of the Ferrari F12000 in which he had so much success a decade ago.
