Line Claims Provisional Pole in Seattle

Event: 23rd annual NHRA Northwest Nationals
Location: Pacific Raceways, Kent, WA
Day/Date: Friday, July 9, 2010

Summit Racing driver Jason Line got his qualifying effort at the NHRA Northwest Nationals in Kent WA off to a tremendous start on Friday, posting the quickest time in each of the two sessions to earn the provisional No. 1 qualifying position. Despite the unseasonably warm temperatures at Pacific Raceways, which saw temperatures approach 90 degrees, Line opened with a solid 6.666-second, 207.94 mph run which placed him atop the field on the strength of a top-speed tiebreaker.

In the second session held late in the afternoon, Line claimed the No. 1 position outright, improving to a 6.612-second elapsed time and 209.01 mph top speed. However, with temperatures forecast to be ten degrees cooler for Saturday’s final two attempts, he acknowledged further improvement would be necessary to secure the 17th No. 1 qualifying position of his Pro Stock career.

“Although it’s great to be at the top of the page on Friday, looking at the forecast for tomorrow, I doubt that 6.61 will keep us there,?? said Line. “After all, it’s supposed to be a lot cooler, which means these Pro Stock Cars should be substantially quicker. The good news is that we have a Summit Racing Pontiac that is fully capable of going out tomorrow and taking that No. 1 spot right back.

“For some reason, our car is really happy when there’s not a lot of bite on the starting line, which were the conditions we had here today. The track is a little rougher than it was last year, but still wasn’t that bad, and it’s only going to get better as the weekend goes on, so we’ll have to make sure to adjust to keep up with it.

“I couldn’t be more excited with how this Summit Racing team is doing. The addition of Tommy Utt has been a real shot in the arm, with he and Rob (crew chief Downing) working really well together. They’re going to make a great team, and the results have already started to show. I earned six bonus points, which is the most I have earned in one day since that program was put in place. All in all, I couldn’t be happier with our performance today and we’re going to do whatever we can tomorrow to hold on to that No. 1 spot.??
