GRAMMER Shows its Design Competence in the New Volkswagen Touareg

AMBERG, GERMANY – July 2, 2010: GRAMMER AG, the Bavarian automotive supplier and seating systems manufacturer, is supplying interior components for the new Volkswagen Touareg: front and rear headrests, armrests in the front and rear and the center console, including various built-in features. Thus, after supplying the center console for the Passat, GRAMMER is once again proving its ability to develop and supply complex components in addition to deliver individual parts.
With this new generation of headrest, GRAMMER has developed and manufactured the first headrest with integrated and simultaneous adjustability along the X and Z axis. With this design, the headrest is no longer linearly adjusted, but rather positioned within an adjustment plane. The driver and front-seat passenger can quickly and easily adjust the height of the headrest and place it as close as possible to the back of the head using the button on the side. The closer the distance between head and headrest, the more effective is the protection of driver and passenger against dreaded whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision. The three headrests in the back are L-shaped and their height can also be adjusted to account for the size of rear-seat passengers.
The rear armrest is designed as a fully upholstered component, featuring two cup holders, and can be completely folded into the backrest.
GRAMMER put a great deal of work into the design of the center console. It comes optional with a single base or with two separate, longitudinally adjustable armrests for driver and front-seat passenger. The longitudinal adjustment allows both the driver and the passenger to individually find the most comfortable armrest positions. By depressing the unlocking mechanism, the armrest can be set in any position forward and back within a range of up to 110 millimeters. Underneath, there is a spacious storage compartment with a capacity of nearly 6 liters. Integrated into the center console is a cup holder with 2 settings for cups of up to 40 oz, an ashtray, elegant knobs for driver and interior climate controls, several toggle switches and the interior cover for the shifter.
Depending on the options selected, the rear section of the center console features various storage compartments, a climate control station, 12 volt and 230 volt outlets and back-seat vents.
The injection molded main body of the center console is comprised of two parts, which allows for different color combinations and thus permits broader variations in use of the design. The large storage compartments are lined with flocking, so as to prevent bothersome rattling of their contents. This, along with the pleasant touch of the materials used, allows vehicle occupants to relax and feel comfortable in their surroundings. In all, there are 48 color and material variations on offer. Different high-quality elements made of wood, aluminum or IML complement the overall impression made by the center console and add to the attractive look.
