Shuttle Express Adds Propane-Fueled Vans to Fleet

SEATTLE--Shuttle Express is moving toward a greener fleet with the addition of 10 new propane-fueled shuttle vans to its line-up. The new vans will transport airport travelers over 2 million miles in their first year of service.

“Propane is a good choice for our operation because of its availability. It’s a good fit for both Shuttle Express and our community.”

Currently, Shuttle Express uses about 800,000 gallons of fuel and travels about 9,000,000 miles each year in the Puget Sound area. Company President John Rowley said switching from gasoline to propane has clear environmental advantages.

“Propane is a clean burning fuel, and will cut our carbon footprint further, on top of the fact we are share-ride. Consumers who are green-conscious will be confident knowing they are reducing emissions on their airport trips,?? Rowley said.

The propane-fueled vans will achieve Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) II emission standards. Compared to new model year gas engines, they are estimated to run about 90 percent cleaner in emissions according to the manufacturer, ROUSH®. Propane burns cleaner than gas, with up to 20 percent less nitrous oxide, up to 60 percent less carbon monoxide and fewer particulate emissions.

Rowley said he believes the transition to propane will be a tremendous success. “We will test these vans this year with the intention of replacing our entire van fleet with propane over the next five years.??

The transportation company has served as SeaTac Airport’s official share-ride company since 1987, taking two million cars off the airport drives each year. Rowley said the company continues to improve and provide an environmentally-conscious solution for its guests.

“Shuttle Express has always been concerned about our environment—our share ride service has been taking cars off the road since 1987,?? Rowley said. “Propane is a good choice for our operation because of its availability. It’s a good fit for both Shuttle Express and our community.??
