Greg Anderson Doubles Up, Wins Summit Racing Equipment Nationals

Starting from the ninth position, Anderson defeated Johnny Gray, Jeg Coughlin and his teammate Jason Line in the early rounds before squaring off against Allen Johnson in the final round. Using a quick .021 reaction time, the three-time champion left the line a hundredth of a second ahead of his opponent and never looked back crossing the finish line in 6.722-seconds with a top speed 204.54 mph to easily outdistance Johnson, who had issues and slowed to a 6.982-second time. The victory, which was Anderson’s first of the season and 61st of his career, came less than a day after he had won the K&N Horsepower Challenge specialty race, which carried a $50,000 first prize, with the dual successes earning a $25,000 “sweep bonus.�?? “I don’t think I could have even dreamt of having a weekend as good as we did here in Norwalk,�?? said Anderson. “Naturally, we had hoped for a better performance coming into Norwalk, looking to go rounds and give ourselves a chance to win, because we have definitely been making gains lately with our Summit Racing Pontiacs. However to come in here and sweep the weekend goes well beyond our greatest expectations. “The cards certainly fell our way the past two days, but we also did our jobs. Our car ran well, and I did my job behind the wheel. It’s been a long time since we had a weekend like this or a car capable of doing it, but we came in here and earned every bit of it. My jaw’s probably going to hurt from smiling so much, but I’m pretty sure I’ll get over it. It’s just been a tremendous weekend all around.�?? Ironically, Anderson’s biggest challenge en route to his second career win at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park turned out to be his KB Racing teammate, Jason Line. Line, who qualified fifth, had defeated current points leader Mike Edwards in the opening stanza, and advanced to the semifinals by defeating veteran Larry Morgan. Running in the less-preferred left-hand lane, Anderson knew he would need an error-free performance to advance, and combined a two-hundredths of a second starting-line advantage and 6.723-second, 204.88 mph run to hold off his hard charging partner and advance to the 90th final round of his career. “I knew Jason would prove to be my toughest race of the day,�?? said Anderson. “After all, we were racing the same equipment, with both cars making great runs throughout the day. We did have some people approach us before the semis and ask if we were going to throw the race because of the double-up bonus, but we’ve never done it before and we were not about to start now. These fans come here to see us race side-by-side, and that’s what we’re going to give them. It was a tremendous race, and I was just fortunate to come out on top.�?? With his performance, Anderson became the second driver in the history of the Pro Stock category to twice accomplish the weekend sweep, joining the legendary Bob Glidden. I believe what we did here this weekend is going to accelerate that healing process.
