Starting Ninth, Anderson Looks to Repeat History in Bristol
Event: 10th annual Thunder Valley NHRA Nationals
Location: Bristol Dragway, Bristol, TN
Day/Date: Saturday, June 19, 2010
On the strength of a 6.761-second time recorded in the first session on Friday afternoon, Greg Anderson qualified his Summit Racing Pontiac ninth for Sunday’s final eliminations of the Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, TN. Although the higher heat and humidity at Bristol Dragway on Saturday slowed most of the naturally-aspirated Pro Stock field, Anderson was able to make two competitive 6.77-second runs as he worked on his set-up for race day, providing data the two-time Bristol winner feels his team will put to good use. He will also look for history to repeat itself, having scored the first national event win of his career at the Tennessee track from the ninth position in 2001.
“We are definitely gaining on things with this Summit Racing Pontiac,?? said Anderson. “These are without a doubt our toughest conditions, and if you compare our performance here with how we did in Topeka, which was the last time we raced in the high heat and humidity, you’ll see we’ve narrowed the gap on the quickest cars. I think I’ll have a car I can race tomorrow.
“Although we’re not completely disappointed with our performance in qualifying, we’re not yet where we want to be. We need to stay on this path, keeping our heads about us, making sure we keep learning. It’s a painstaking deal, but we’re going to have to be patient and keep chipping away at it, because we’re definitely on the right track.
“We may not be the favorite to win this race tomorrow, but we certainly have to be considered at least a dark horse. I think both Jason’s and my cars are going to work fairly well – they may not run low e.t., but they should be within a hundredth or two, which gives us a chance to win, so we’re going to try and go as deep as we can in eliminations. I’ve won in Bristol before from the ninth position, and there’s no reason we can’t do it again tomorrow.??
