Charity Ride Stops in Iowa to Support Families of Officers Killed in the Line of Duty

DES MOINES, Iowa--Approximately 150 police officers nationwide are killed each year in the line of duty, which leaves their families and co-workers to cope with the tragic loss. The mission of Ride4Cops is to raise awareness of the inherent dangers of law enforcement and the sacrifices made by the families of fallen officers. Supporting the needs of the families left behind is the core mission of Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.), a national not-for-profit organization.

“Law enforcement who protect each community in Iowa every day are heroes who deserve our support”

Harry Herington, Chief Executive Officer of eGovernment firm NIC , has committed to raising more than $150,000 during the next three years for C.O.P.S. and local organizations that support the needs of families of fallen officers. As a former police officer, Harry is passionate about this cause and is personally riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle to every capitol across the country to raise awareness. Iowans can follow the program’s progress at http://www.ride4cops.com.

On Wednesday, June 16, Herington will honor Iowa’s fallen police officers and their survivors with a memorial ride. In addition, he will present a personal donation to C.O.P.S. that is earmarked for Iowa survivors as well as matching gifts from Iowa Interactive, LLC, Peoples Bank & Trust, and other organizations. The ride begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Des Moines Police Station (25 East First Street) and will end at Iowa Peace Officers Memorial, which is located on the north side of the Lucas State Building (321 East 12th Street). Riders will assemble at 9:30 a.m. at the Des Moines Police Station, and the event ceremony will take place at the Iowa Peace Officers Memorial at the conclusion of the ride.

“Law enforcement who protect each community in Iowa every day are heroes who deserve our support,?? said Herington. “As a former police officer, I know from experience that an officer’s biggest concern is not falling in the line of duty, but what happens to their family if they do. That is why I am committed to raising awareness in Iowa for this great cause, and I encourage others to follow the ride and get involved at Ride4Cops.com.??
