GORDON DEFENDS TITLE; AUSTIN ALSO SCORES BIG
FALLON, Nev., (June 14, 2010) - Doug Gordon picked up where he left off last year at Top Gun Raceway and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series taking the win in Top Alcohol Funny Car and his fourth straight at Top Gun. Gordon has not lost at the Fallon, Nev., facility since 2005. (The Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car classes did not compete in the 2007 event.)
Gordon qualified No. 1 in his '07 Monte Carlo and beat Jessica Cherniack, Henderson, Nev., and second generation driver Steve Gasparrelli, West Covina, Calif., on his way to a final round match up with No. 2 qualifier John Lombardo Jr., Brea, Calif. Gordon, of Paso Robles, Calif., ran consistent all day posting runs of 5.907 and 5.900 in rounds 1 & 2 then another 5.900 seconds at 244.56 mph in the final to Lombardo's 6.232, 212.93 mph.
Medford, Ore., racer Mike Austin defeated Shawn Cowie in the final of Top Alcohol Dragster with a lap of 5.688 seconds at 250.55 mph while Cowie suffered mechanical problems. Austin held off former Pacific Division Champion Chris Demke in the semifinals taking the win on a holeshot.
Ryan McClanahan and Mera Silvia each took home their second win of the year as McClanahan, Alta Loma, Calif., ousted Wes King, Eagle, Idaho, in Super Stock and Silvia, Upland, Calif., won over Art Hoover, Concord, Calif., in the Hughes Performance Top Dragster class. Silvia ran 7.040 seconds at 192.52 mph to Hoover's 7.722, 171.82. Both racers won last month at Auto Club Dragway as McClanahan won at the JEGS Pacific Sportsnationals and Silvia won the re-scheduled NHRA Arizona Nationals which was completed at Auto Club Dragway during the JEGS event.
This was Hoover's second final round appearance of the weekend as he took the win on Saturday for the re-scheduled Lucas Oil event from Firebird Raceway. Hoover took the win in Top Dragster when Joe Roubicek left early with a red-light foul.
Randy Jones, Monarch Beach, Calif., won in Comp Eliminator against Pat Byron marking his second final round of the year in his '05 Cavalier and Roubicek, Westlake Village, Calif., put his '68 Camaro in the winner's circle for the Top Sportsman class.
Other winner's this past weekend for the Lucas Oil Series at Top Gun Raceway were Mark Lelchook, Foresthill, Calif., in Stock; Larry Kinard, San Diego, Calif., in Super Comp; Val Torres Jr., Valinda, Calif., in Super Gas; Bill Gee, Silverton, Ore., in Super Street; and Gary Oaks, Las Vegas, in Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson.
Joining Hoover with wins on Saturday for the re-scheduled Lucas Oil event were Wayne Newman, Lancaster, Calif., in Top Sportsman and Sean Conner, Boulder City, Nev., in sportsman motorcycle.
Pacific Division racers head to Infineon Raceway for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, July 23-25.
