New York, NY- The F2000 Championship Series lands in Mosport this weekend
for rounds five and six of the 14-round, seven-weekend 2010 national
championship. After sweeping Road Atlanta, and winning three out of four
races this season, Victor Carbone, driving the #23 Van Diemen/Zetec for
Alegra Motorsports, has a sizeable margin in the points and is the hot
driver coming into Mosport. Carbone won the season opening race at VIR, and
then ran away with the double-race weekend at Road Atlanta.
Carbone expects to be quick in Canada. (click for high-res). (photo: Janice

“Last year we had a great weekend here and it was our best performance to
date at the time,?? said Carbone. “I really like the track; it’s very
challenging and keeps you on the edge. In 2009 we had a great set-up on the
car here and we’ve only been improving since then, so the goal is to go home
with two trophies.??
Sitting second in points is 2007 F2000 title-holder Cole Morgan. The
American, moving over to Liberty Motorsports from K-Hill for this event,
tasted victory at VIR and has been quick all season.
Morgan added: “I’ve never been to Mosport before, but I’m not scared of the
place. Everyone tells me it was built for a guy like me, but I’ll sure as
heck respect the concrete surrounding it. I just hope I can get back to
winning this weekend, we were off our game a bit in Atlanta.??
Just four points adrift from Morgan is Carbone’s teammate and fellow
Brazilian, Fabio Orsolon, driving the #26 for Alegra Motorsports. The Alegra
duo paced every single official session at Road Atlanta, and Orsolon
finished second in the first race before a late-race incident knocked him
off the podium in round two. Orsolon scored the first podium of his F2000
career at Mosport last season.
Expect to see more of this too as Cole Morgan (left) and Jonathan Scarallo
(right) battle for every inch. (click for high-res). (photo: Janice Eakin).
And then there’s Jonathan Scarallo. The 18-year old New Yorker is coming off
a career-best second at Road Atlanta in the #22 R-Sport entry.
"Mosport is one of the few tracks that probably every driver and team member
highlights on the schedule,?? said Scarallo, who is in his second F2000
season. “The track is one of the best and the fans are too. We have momentum
coming off a podium finish and I was quick here last season. Anything less
than a win and I will be disappointed."
Scarallo’s teammate, Keith McCrone, in the #5 Masters Class (drivers over
the age of 40) Van Diemen, should figure in as well after finishing fifth at
Road Atlanta.
Quebec's Remy Audette will fly the hometown flag, he is the only Canadian in
the field. (click for high-res). (photo: Janice Eakin).
Quebec’s Remy Audette was quick at Mosport last year and should be near the
sharp end of the grid in the #21 Audette Racing Van Diemen. The Canadian
sits ninth in the national championship after missing Road Atlanta, but
finished second in round two at VIR.
Phil Lombardi is leading the Masters Class drivers at Mosport and could play
spoiler for an overall win. The veteran sits fifth in the standings, driving
the #3 GTP Van Diemen.
“Mosport is my favorite track,?? said Lombardi. “In a sick and twisted way I
hope it rains all weekend. We've been good all year and have gotten better
every race, but don't have the results to match the effort, although every
race we finish better. We've yet to show what we are really capable of and
Mosport needs to be our turning point.??
There will be some Series newcomers as well. Felix Serralles makes his first
F2000 start, driving the #17 for GTP Motorsports. Serralles, out of Miami,
is moving up from the Skip Barber Series. Zack Craigo will make his 2010
debut, last having driven in 2008. Craigo will pilot the #85 for Liberty
Motorsports.
There are more storylines in the F2000 paddock: Chris Livengood was a solid
ticket-holder to the top ten at both weekends so far this season, and the
#37 will be Zetec powered for the first time, having just completed an
engine swap to replace a Pinto. Jesse Yorio has the newest hardware on the
grid, the #11 Piper DF5C chassis. Ardie Greenamyer is coming off two
career-best top tens in the #28 and is picking up steam. Seven-time SCCA
national Champion Dave Weitzenhof won the Masters Class at Mosport last year
and his #67 is the only Citation chassis in the field.
Live updates will be available throughout the event on Twitter @F2000 and on
www.F2000ChampionshipSeries.com. Friday features two official practice
sessions with a third following early Saturday morning. Qualifying gets
underway in the late morning on Saturday before a mid-afternoon race. Sunday
features a morning qualifying session followed by race two of the weekend at
11:45 am.
