ROCKY MOUNTAIN RACEWAY IS SHOWING ITS MUSCLE IN THE JOE GIBBS DRIVEN RACING OIL
ASA MEMBER TRACK NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
American Speed Association PR
DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Wednesday, June 9, 2010) - Doug Binstock, General Manager of
Rocky Mountain Raceways, an ASA Member Track in West Valley City, UT is enjoying
the competition he is seeing with his Modified division so far this season. The
competition is reflected in their current track point standings and in the Joe Gibbs
Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship standings.
"It's still early, but I tell you what, the competition that we have had so far,
you would be amazed at," Binstock said. "We made some changes this season like
adding commitment cone on restarts, that is allowing for more passing and giving
our fast guys who start at the back a better opportunity to get to the front. The
fans are loving it."
The top six competitors in the Modified division are only separated by 96 points
in the RMR point standings. But when you look at that top six, in the Joe Gibbs
Driven ASA Member Track National Championship, you won't see the same standings.
Nick Parker is the current points leader at RMR and has a 35-point lead over Bryan
Wordelman in the track standings. Binstock said that Parker had a great start to
the 2010 season but has recently had some bad luck which has hurt him in the National
Championship chase. Parker is currently tenth in the West Region with an average
of 1.3881 while Wordelman is ninth with a 1.3912 average.
On the opposite side, Roger Wilson is sitting sixth in points at RMR but has the
highest average overall with a 1.5628. Mark Ith Jr. who is third in track points
is second overall with an average of 1.5282.
So, how does this happen? Remember in the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member
Track National Championship, the average created is just as the same as a batting
average in baseball, its an accumulation of your performance for the season. Parker
had a strong start to his season with a win and a second place finish, but two DNF's
has not helped his average, but he is still able to main the points lead at RMR
because of his strong start.
Wilson has shown more consistency as he has four top-five finishes so far and only
one DNF thus giving him a higher average in the early going. Both drivers do have
one feature win each so far.
Binstock isn't worried about it this early in the season as he is aware that many
factors are involved in National Championship standings and is confident that as
the season goes on, it will pan out and the best driver will shine at RMR.
Of the current track point leaders, Clint LaFont of Thunderhill Raceway, an ASA
Member Track in Kyle, TX still has the lead with an average of 1.4989 with Parker
in second with his 1.3881. Thomas Hill of Meridian Speedway is third with an average
of 1.1785.
Over in the East Region, Scott Broughton picked up an opening day win and is the
current points leader at Madison International Speedway, an ASA Member Track in
Oregon, WI. He also leads the East Region with an average of 1.0678.
Two things to remember, the track champion will be eligible for the National Championship
at the end of the season. The second, these averages will change until the competitors
have at least 14 events on record in the standings in order for the formula that
creates the average to work to its full advantage.
"This is a very interesting start to our third National Championship," Dennis Huth,
ASA President said. "The formula is working the way we want. It is creating interest,
intrigue and excitement all across the United States. Doug Binstock and his competitors
at Rocky Mountain Raceways are a great example of the excitement shown at the short
tracks. Not only do they have to compete, but they have to good consistent finishes.
One or two bad nights could make a difference for a tryout with Joe Gibbs Racing.
Like I said, it's already getting interesting."
Drivers eligible for the National Championship must race weekly at an ASA Member
Track along with being the 2010 track champion. The unique formula used to determine
the champion not only includes where they finished but how many positions they moved
up in each feature event. Which will provide the best weekly short track racing
action this season. The 2010 National Championship season will end at midnight
on Sunday, September 26, 2010.
