Land Rover's May sales jump 42 per cent

LONDON: Tata group firm Land Rover today said its total sales have gone up by 42.3 per cent in May at 15,181 units over the same period a year ago.

"All global markets have shown an increase versus May last year... Sales have been improving consistently since the launch of the 2010 model year range, which boasts the latest, most efficient, and technologically advanced line-up for Land Rover in its history," the company said in a statement.

The domestic market premium utility vehicle maker remained the highest contributor with sales climbing 64 per cent to 3,040 units. It was followed by North America that witnessed sales of 2,935 units, registering 24 per cent jump, Land Rover said.

China and Italy contributed with 2,026 units and 1,133 units, which saw a rise of 104 per cent and 25.9 per cent, respectively over the corresponding month in 2009, it added.

In the UK, Freelander 2 continued to be the best-seller in last month with 60 per cent improvement against May 2009. Range Rover became the highest growing model in May, showing a 121 per cent improvement in vehicle registration.

Sales of other models such as Discovery 4 was up 87 per cent, Range Rover Sport was up 58 per cent and Defender was up by 32 per cent during May 2010.
