Strike at Hyundai continues
Workers at the Hyundai Motor India Ltd factory continued to strike for the second day as conciliation efforts proved inconclusive.
According to a statement by Hyundai Motor, police evicted over 200 workers on a sit-in strike within the factory at Sriperumbudur about 35 kms from Chennai. The company will now look at resuming production at the earliest. The production loss is about 2,000 cars daily representing about Rs 65 crore on an average.
The company said that it would strive to resolve the issue through the State Government Labour Department. Conciliation efforts will continue. The workers led by the Hyundai Motor India Employees Union have declared the strike demanding management recognition of the union and reinstatement of 67 dismissed workers.
Mr A. Soundararajan, Honorary President of the CITU-led union, said that the union and the management representatives met with the Labour Department officials separately And the discussions are to continue .
Union leaders said that over 360 workers have been arrested and evicted from the factory shop floor.
