New DriveCam Insights: Focus on Gas & Propane Delivery Fleets

SAN DIEGO--DriveCam Inc., a global Driver Risk Management company, continued its Insights Series™ by focusing on fleet vehicles of companies delivering gas and propane. Designed to provide insight for executives and managers throughout a variety of transportation industries, DriveCam’s Insights Series is derived from DriveCam’s extensive database of over 17 million driving events from 2 billion driving miles – the largest in the world.

With so much focus in the news on collisions caused by distracted driving, DriveCam was surprised to find that it actually ranks #4 on the list of behaviors in Gas & Propane Delivery fleets. Following too Close, Not Looking Far Ahead and Traffic Violations are bigger issues than Distractions in this industry. A closer look at the data reveals that nearly half of all risky driving events are a result of following too close – the primary behavior identified. Handheld cell phone violations, along with food and drink represent the primary distractions committed in risky driving events. The Top 5 Driving Behaviors among Gas & Propane Delivery fleets in order are:

1. Following too Close

2. Not Looking Far Ahead

3. Traffic Violations

4. Distractions

5. Failed to Keep an Out

Looking at the data, DriveCam found that Following Too Close (44 percent) was nearly four times as likely to occur as Traffic Violations (12 percent), while Not Looking Far Ahead (33%) was nearly three times as likely.

In examining Collision Rates (collisions per vehicle in service), DriveCam found a lower collision rate between consumer propane delivery trucks (3.3 percent) and gasoline tanker delivery trucks (4.7 percent).

DriveCam’s Insights Series is released on an on-going basis.
