Vero Beach, June 5, 2010: Rusty Mitchell has signed with Juncos Racing for the remainder of the 2010 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear season. A current competitor in the 2010 Star Mazda Championship, this year marks Mitchell's second full season and third year of experience in a Formula Mazda. The Midlands, Texas native will make his debut as a Juncos Racing driver at the Pizza Ranch 100 event at Iowa Speedway June 18-19.
"I am so excited to be joining Juncos Racing," said Mitchell. "I can't wait for the chance to work with all the team members. I think this transition will help me progress as a driver, and I also think I will be a good team member for Juncos Racing. Additionally, I want to thank all of my sponsors who have made this possible-Motorola, Petro Communications, HRP Racing Products, and Texas Autosports."
In 2009, Mitchell won his first career pole in the Star Mazda Championship at the GP3R in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec with a time of 1:01.341-a lap time that made Mitchell the current track record holder. He went on to finish second in the race, proving he has the speed it takes to win. Mitchell finished the 2009 season with two top-five and four top-ten finishes to his name, ultimately finishing 12th in the driver's championship. Mitchell has also never finished outside the top six positions on an oval track, making him an odds-on favorite going into Round Five at Iowa Speedway's .875-mile oval.
Mitchell will bring his current sponsors with him to the Juncos Racing team where he will proudly display their support on his new #66 Juncos Racing / Motorola / Petro Communications / HRP Racing Products / Texas Autosports car.
"We are excited to be joining Juncos Racing," said Mike Mitchell, father of Rusty and owner of Mitchell Motorsports. "Ricardo and the whole team have proven how good things can be when everyone works together. I think this is a great opportunity for Rusty to both learn and improve his skills. Hopefully, we can help bring the 2010 team championship to Juncos Racing."
Mitchell will also gain two valuable assets he has never had before as a competitor in the Star Mazda Championship, teammates Conor Daly and Tatiana Calderon. As well as becoming a member of the current Championship-leading team, having these teammates to share information with could be a major key to success in Mitchell's 2010 season.
"I'm so excited to have Rusty on our team," said Ricardo Juncos, Juncos Racing Team Owner. "I always believed in his talent. He showed everyone last year at Trois-Rivieres that he can win; he started from the pole position and should have won that race. He has shown a lot of potential on oval tracks as well.
"This year has undoubtedly been so difficult for him and his team to be more consistently at the top of the field because it's so difficult to do well with only one driver. Many other teams have two or more good drivers to share data and setups with which is definitely an advantage.
"I'm very sure we can give Rusty (Mitchell) what he needs to be on top. Having other teammates and the help of Peter Dempsey as a coach, that won't be a problem. We have his car almost ready to go; we just need to make adjustments with him next week. We are really looking forward to our next race at Iowa Speedway."
Round Five of the Star Mazda Championship will take place on Iowa Speedway's .875-mile oval in Newton, Iowa June 18-19. For more information, please go to www.juncosracing.com.
