Media Release: Brabham Ready For Four Wins At Le Mans
Media Release: Brabham Ready For Four Wins At Le Mans
London, UK - Thursday, June 3, 2010; David Brabham has his sights set on
scribing another entry into the history books of the world's biggest endurance
race, on June 12-13, with four consecutive wins in three different classes at
the 2010 outing of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Outright victor with Team Peugeot in 2009, Brabham's LMP1 title followed
back-to-back GT1 class wins with Aston Martin Racing in 2007 and 2008. This year
the sportscar legend returns to France contesting LMP2, helping Highcroft Racing
make their Le Mans debut.
Although 2010 marks the team's first time at Le Mans, the Brabham/Highcroft
partnership is of course no stranger to success. Winning the 2009 American Le
Mans Series title earned Highcroft Racing an invitation to compete in the world
famous race and the reigning champions leave for Le Mans leading the 2010 ALMS
title fight.
"I've been part of Highcroft Racing since the beginning of their 2007 Acura
programme and I couldn't be more proud to be going to Le Mans with them," said
Brabham. "It's the biggest sportscar event in the world and the team is
absolutely ready for it.
"Racing with some fantastic teams and teammates has helped me to deliver perfect
races the last three years. I've also been fortunate, in some ways, to be part
of organisations that are so well prepared, organised and focussed - all the
ingredients you need to win.
"Highcroft Racing has all of those attributes in abundance, and plenty more
besides. It's taken them less than five years to tick every mission box and Le
Mans has long been on the cards. Now it's time to realise that dream and part of
that dream is winning."
One of few drivers to have joined an elite club of those to have scored wins in
multiple classes at Le Mans, Brabham returns to the notorious La Sarthe circuit
for the 17th time in 2010.
"A lot of people have asked me if I am disappointed not to be fighting for the
overall win this year," continued Brabham. "Just to compete at Le Mans is an
honour and for me it doesn't matter what class you are in, when you win that
class it feels like you have won the race.
"I know now, having had experience of winning in class and outright, it feels
the same. The only difference is people's perception. Certainly for any team
member winning any class at Le Mans is no different to winning overall."
Joining Brabham in the Highcroft Racing HPD ARX-01c will be his ALMS teammate,
Marino Franchitti, and multiple Le Mans winner Marco Werner.
"Le Mans is a mighty challenge whatever class you drive in," said Brabs. "For
me, helping Highcroft Racing make their debut is a refreshing, new challenge
which I love.
"I know what it takes to win and with my experience, teamed with Marino and
Marco, who has been just as successful as me with three Le Mans victories, we
know what it takes to win that big race."
Instead of Highcroft's usual Patrón title sponsor branding, Malaria No More will
be the primary signage on the side of the car for Le Mans, with the aim of
raising funds to combat the preventable disease which kills a child in Africa
every 30 seconds.
Brabham said: "This is a cause close to my heart, as I am a Special Ambassador
to Malaria No More UK and the team's 2009 Miles to End Malaria campaign raised
more than $63,000 to provide bed nets for families in Africa.
"The scope to spread Malaria No More's message through the global Le Mans
audience is huge. I hope that vital funds can be raised to save lives during Le
Mans."
For just £5/$10 an entire family in Africa can be protected against malaria.
Race fans throughout the world can join Highcroft Racing's Miles to End Malaria
pledging pit crew online at http://www.milestoendmalaria.org. An ebay auction,
featuring memorabilia courtesy of Highcroft and other teams and drivers, will
also be held to raise money for the cause.
Brabham will hit the track with Highcroft for the first time on Wednesday, June
9, from 4pm to 8pm (local time). Official qualifying takes place that night from
10pm to 12 midnight and again on Thursday, from 7pm to 9pm and 10pm to
12midnight. The green flag will fall on the 78th running of the 24 Hours of Le
Mans at 3pm on Saturday, June 12.
