West Lebanon, NY: The legendary ¨ö dirt high banked oval located on State Route 20 in Upstate NY known as the Valley of Speed came to life again this past Saturday Night with a full card of racing action provided by Able Tractor and the Times Union.
The Big Block Modifieds took to high banks for their 30 lap feature event. On the front row, Rich Salisbury and Lorne Browe brought the field to the green flag. But the caution flew before they exited turn 2 as the #34H of Steve Hough and the #87X of Paul Gilardi made contact and spun in front of the field. Both were towed to the pits for further repairs.
Back under way Salisbury took control of the field and held off all challengers through 13 laps on the Kokosa Oil lap counter. Hard charging Donnie Corellis took over 2nd place by lap 12, then charged past Salisbury for the lead by lap 14.
Caution flew once more for a multi-car accident on the backstretch involving several cars, including last weeks winner Ray Hoard on lap 24. After the clean up, Corellis turned on the cruise control and scored his first win of 2010.
A steady pace through the field scored Eddie Marshall a solid 2nd place finish. 3rd over the line was Brett Hearn, followed by Lorne Browe and Kyle Sheldon.
A 31 car Budget Sportsman Field took their turn on the super fast Valley of Speed. Joe Carnibucci and Robby Knipe brought the 20 lap feature to the start as the #88 of Carnibucci gets out front early. But the racing came to an immediate halt on lap 2 as contract between Kevin Lynch¡¯s #09 and the #1 of Jason Harrington sparked a multi-car incident that collected upwards of 8 cars, causing a red flag situation.
After a short while removing Ernie Palmer Jr from his battered car, he was released by the ambulance under his own power. The red flag was finally lifted, the field came back to life as the green flag flew once again.
The #18 of Robby Knipe darted into the top spot by lap 5, and settled in to defending that position. Several attempts by the #97 of Bobby Hackel III to power by Knipe was not to be as the legendary Knipe name returns to winners circle.
With 4 decades of racing and winning by his father Bobby Knipe, this time he had to watch for back in the field as son Robby Knipe takes his first career win at Lebanon Valley Speedway.
Hackel had to settle for 2nd with defending champ Jason Harrington finishing 3rd. Joe Carnibucci held on for 4th with Rob Barile rounding out the top 5.
In the LV Sportsman then took to the speedway for their 20 lap feature event. This saw Danny Sanchez out front early an in control until his #63 began having handling issues, and he relented the lead to Brian Sandstedt aboard his #12.
Last week, Sandstedt found himself flipping through turn 4 at the end of the main event, so it felt good to get out front this time, on all 4 wheels. A couple of cautions and a handful of challenges to take the win away were for naught, as Sandstedt recovers to take the victory. Kyle Hoffman finished a close 2nd followed by Kim Herrick, Jeff Watson, and Frank Harper.
Jay Casey was out front of the 20 lap Pro Stock feature for a handful of laps until the handling went away on his #322, handing the lead over to Kevin Arnold¡¯s #76 by lap 5.
Arnold¡¯s super fast #76 was too hot to stay close too as he pulled away from the field, and scores his 2nd win of 2010. Jay Casey crossed the line 2nd followed by Nick Hilt, Jay Corbin and Victor Hopkins to complete the top 5 finishers.
In the Pure Stocks, nearly 50 competitors were on tap for 3 feature events. In Pure Stock #1, John Devine scores the win. Pure Stock #2 was captured by Bob Palmer, while in Pure Stock #3 saw another father-son battle with Ray Hall Jr taking the win over Ray Hall Sr.
Next Saturday June 5th will feature the KeyBank $4,000 to Win Modified Feature Event, along with Dollar Dog Night, and Twister¡¯s 20 lap Pure Stock Special!
