The well-known Champion Speedway in Owego is set to open its doorson May 30th with a special Sunday early evening race on the holiday weekend. Theevent will be billed as the Omar Lightner Cup Championship in honor of theformer Vestal Police Officer and track worker. Construction is nearing an end onan all-new concrete oval slick track for for concession go-karts as well at thefacility. The track will be open nearly every day of the week and will cater toboth adults and children. Champion Speedway will also host BMX and Motocrossracing all summer long. Over 40 Speedway riders have already signed up tocompete on May 30th, not including competitors for ATV and dirt bike classeswhich will run prior to the scheduled 6 pm start time. Included in the 40 riderprofessional speedway field are Multi-time Speedway Champions Tuff McBride ofWindsor, Gene Bonsignore of Rochester, Two-time Action Park Champion, CaseyDonholt of Port Crane, current East Coast Champion, Adam "Missile" Mittl ofEndicott, who will carry the number one plate, former Champion Speedway trackChampion, Mikey Buman of Binghamton, NY State Ice Champion, Dave Clark ofBerkshire, Jerry "Buford" Harman of Newark Valley, Brian Hollenbeck of Owego,Andy Crawford of Apalachin, Russ "Doctor Dirt" Cornell and Keith Hawkins ofNichols, Shawn "Steamboat" Engel of Endicott, Katalin Davis of Chenango andmore! The support speedway division is on the upswing with local fanfavorites like "Dangerous" Dan Harbst, "Daring" Don Wheeland, Bunk Harris andBrian Bailey all confirmed plus a host of new riders for this summer. "Jammin"Jeff Garlinghouse and Mark "Battlescar" Bradley of Rochester should be frequentvisitors. The ATV program is also growing at a fast pace and will likely beheaded by local pros Ed Reilly, Dan "Barlow" Hawk, Steve Kappler, Steve Tarsia,Tom Donahue, Stoney Ray, Sean "Big Daddy" Neal, Rick Ganoung, Dave Kent and TimJackson.
Speedway Motorcycles have absolutely no brakes, go from 0 to 60mphin less than 3 seconds and slide totally sideways on the dirt oval. Crowds of20,000 plus attend races overseas where speedway reigns supreme. The sportremains one of the most affordable forms of family fun in the area with adulttickets at Champion costing only $10.00. Kids 6-12 are only $3.00 and there aremany events on Champion's schedule offering discounted promotions. Parking andprograms are free!
The 2010 season kicks off Sunday, May, 30 at 6pm but thetrack will remain a mostly Saturday Night track, it has been Saturdays mostyears since 97, for this summer after week one. The speedway and ATV schedulewill run weekly. Champion's sister track, Action Park East in Greene, opens aday earlier on May 29th at 7pm. 5 DIVISIONS + SOUTHERN ROCK AT SHANGRI-LA IISUNDAY
TIOGA CENTER, N.Y. - Officials of Shangri-La II Motor Speedway haveannounced that the Memorial Day Madness event next weekend has been consolidatedinto a one-day, five-class program on Sunday, May 30. Originally a two-day eventwas envisioned at the ASA Member Track, but the heavy racing schedule around theregion on the first holiday weekend of the season meant the change was in theinterest of all parties.
"We've all had our share of weather issues in May,and Shangri-La II has been more fortunate than most tracks," said track managerAmy Stilson. "We owe it to our fans, our race teams, and our sponsors to presentthe best possible product, and we saw that a Sunday-only event was the best wayto achieve that," she added.
Modifieds, ASA Late Models, SportsmanModifieds, and Street Stocks will be joined by the INEX Legends, with doublepoints for regular distance in the four weekly divisions.
Shangri-La IIMotor Speedway has added a post-race party with the southern rock band IronHorse from Ithaca to the lineup for this Sunday's "Memorial Day Madness" eventat the half-mile concrete oval. Adult admission to both the race and the partyremains at the regular price of $12. The five-class ASA Member Track racingprogram starts at 3:00 p.m., with Iron Horse scheduled to perform on the groundsadjacent to the speedway after the final victory lane ceremonies, which shouldbe approximately 7:00 p.m. The party, with food and beverages available, willlast through the evening.
Although the band was formed in 2007, the membersof Iron Horse have been around the regional music scene for many years in avariety of groups. The lineup of Dave Halton (lead guitar), Mark Armstrong(rhythm guitar), Steve Peck (drums), and Ron Brock (bass) play a variety ofLynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top classics, plus selections form Molly Hatchet, 38Special, Stevie Ray Vaughn, the Allman Brothers, and other artists.
Pitgates for "Memorial Day Madness" open at 11:00 a.m. to accomodate the fiveclasses scheduled, and grandstands open at 12:45. Practice is at 1:00 p.m. withthe first heat at 3:00 p.m. Modifieds, ASA Late Models, Sportsman Modifieds,Street Stocks, and INEX Legends will compete with double points for regulardistance in all except the Legends.
Fans are reminded that no beer is beingsold at the track. Persons of legal age may bring beer to the races and to theparty for their own consumption, but no coolers over 18 x 18 inches are allowedin the stands and no glass bottles anywhere on the grounds.
Shangri-La IIMotor Speedway is located on top of the ridge, one mile east of Tioga Center. ARDC MIDGETS FRIDAY AT PENN CAN
Susquehanna, PA…Thegreat racing action intensifies at Penn Can Speedway on Friday with the only2010 appearance of the world famous American Race Driver’s Club Midgets. Theywill be joined by the mighty modifeds, crate sportsman, street stocks, and fourcylinders. Action gets started with hot laps at 6:45 followed the firstqualifying heat race at 7:15.
Ever year the exciting ARDC midgets come to theSusquehanna County oval and thrill the fans with their side by side racing onthe ultra fast three eighths mile oval. The ARDC organization is the longestrunning midget club in the United States. Stars from this wingless midget clubhave gone on to be legendary stars of the sport dating back to the fifties andsixties. One of those mentioned stars was an up and coming star from Nazareth,Pennsylvania by the name of Mario Andretti. Andretti went on to have a stellarcareer in motorsports winning the Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500, and Formula 1Championship during his racing career.
The 2010 edition of the AmericanRacer Driver’s Club will be lead into Penn Can Speedway by current point leaderEric Heydenreich. A full field of midgets will be at the speedway to compete inqualifying heat races and a twenty five lap feature event.
The big newscoming out of Penn Can Speedway Friday was about the always exciting latemodels. It was announced by speedway management that rules for the late modeldivision will be changed to open racing up to more late model teams. It was alsoannounced the late model purse would be restructures. The first race under thenew rules and purse will be Friday June 4th. The event will be atwenty five lap feature paying the winner $1000.

(Monroeton, PA) Dunn Hill 2 Speedway has desided to cancel the 360Late Models for Wednesday, June 2nd and add the IMCA Type Modifieds to theSpalding Foundation for Injured Drivers Night with Fireworks by Donnora.
The IMCA Type Modifieds will have a 30 lap feature event that will pay$500 to win. The Pro Stocks will do battle in a 20 lap feature event with thewinner becoming a guaranteed qualifier for the Hurricane Harry Uhl, Jr. Memorialto be held at the Thunder Mountain Speedway on Sunday, August 15th. The MiniStocks will do battle in a 20-lap non-points feature event on this specialevening.
A dollar of every grandstand admission ticket sold will godirectly to the Spalding Foundation for Injured Drivers that is operated byBetty Sherwood.
