Newport News, VA- May 22 was the first Twin race of the 2010 season for the Late Models division and the night did not disappoint those who go to the races for beating and banging. There were a total of 6 cautions which sidelined several cars for the evening.
Casey qualified 10th for the first event and was racing for 8th position when contact with another car left his #29 machine with heavy damage to the exhaust. Despite the damage, he was able to finish the 75 lap event 7th.
For the second race, the top 8 finishers were inverted for the start. This put Casey on the outside pole when the green flag dropped. He was the only car to make it to turn two before the caution flag waved for a multi-car pileup between the start -finish line and turn one. When the field came to the green, track officials had set the field for a complete restart. As a result, the bottom line moved up and Casey restarted 2nd. Poor radio reception from his spotter held Casey on the outside until lap 10 when he was able to get to the bottom of the track, putting him in 5th place. He maintained that position until lap 20 when the handling of his Monte Carlo started to go away. It was immediately apparent to him that he was having brake problems. Coupled with the fact that all of his restarts for the evening were from outside positions, his tires let go very early on. With his ability to keep the car under him getting increasingly harder, Casey pulled his car into the attention of his crew. The crew determined after looking at the suspension of the car, that they would have to retire from the race due to a loose center link and less than 15 laps left to race. Once the dust settled, his second race would be good for an 11th place finish.
While they came to the track with high hopes for the day, Casey battled through the stomach flu, multiple races and 6 cautions for 7th and 11th place finishes. But they took their car home in one piece and for that the team considered themselves “blessed.”
Casey and his fellow competitors in the Crossroads Fuel Late Model division won’t be the feature division this weekend. They will race 100 laps after the completion of the USAR Pro-Cup 250 race. Racing starts 7pm…..
