Monterey, May 19, 2010: Juncos Racing will take on Round Three of the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear this weekend at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California as the current Championship leaders. Conor Daly, driver of the #22 Juncos Racing / INDECK / College Network / Merchant Services Ltd. / Tom Lange Co. car, started the season in March with a third place podium finish at the Sebring International Raceway which was quickly followed the next weekend with a win on the Streets of St. Petersburg.
Though the Star Mazda Championship saw a two month break between rounds two and three, Juncos Racing bridged the gap with both a private test at New Jersey Motorsports Park as well as the official series test at O'Reilly Raceway Park. At the latter test, Conor Daly once again claimed the fastest overall lap time of the weekend as well as one of the fastest lap times ever recorded in an open-wheel racing car on the .686-mile track.
In her rookie season, Tatiana Calderon, driver of the #25 Juncos Racing / Kia Motors car, has continued to impress as she improves more and more with every on-track session. At the official oval test at O'Reilly Raceway Park the beginning of this month, Calderon started the week off with a lap time that was nearly three seconds off the pace; however, she finished the last session with a lap time that was only .5 off the pace, successfully conquering her first time driving on an oval track. After two unfortunate incidents in her first two races this season, the young woman from Colombia is ready to take on the California road course this weekend with the hopes of running the race incident-free and finishing strongly.
Though Calderon will meet Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the first time this week, neither Conor Daly nor Juncos Racing is a stranger to the 2.238-mile road course that awaits them this weekend. Last season, Daly started the race from 15th position and worked his way up through the field to finish eleven places ahead in 4th position. Juncos Racing took the fastest lap time in both official practice sessions as well as the pole position last season with driver Peter Dempsey, who now assists as a driving coach for the team this season. With this powerful combination of talent and skill all coming together in 2010, it seems Juncos Racing has potentially brewed the right concoction for success this weekend.
Round Three of the Star Mazda Championship officially starts tomorrow, Thursday, May 20, with two official test sessions followed by two official practice sessions on Friday, qualifying on Saturday, and the race on Sunday. Round Four will take place the weekend immediately following Round Three, May 28-29, in Indianapolis as part of the "Night Before the 500" event at O'Reilly Raceway Park, marking the first official oval race of the 2010 season.
