CLEO/QELS will deliver exclusive and timely programming for its attendees. Here’s a preview of local area researchers, presenters and companies that will be at the conference: |
- In his “Solar in California?? session during the Market Focus program, Jurgen Daniel, senior scientist at the Palo Alto Research Center, will discuss solar photovoltaics and recent policies and innovations in solar energy in California. Solar energy is seen as the most viable long-term solution to future energy demands, and it has significant growth potential in areas with abundant sunshine, such as California. The talk takes place Tuesday, May 18 on the CLEO: Expo show floor.
- At the LaserFest Symposium celebrating the 50th anniversary of the laser, Nobel Laureates, laser pioneers and laser experts will offer retrospectives on the invention of the laser. Edward Moses of the Lawrence Livermore National Lab will speak about 50 years of laser research at that facility; Charles Townes of Berkeley will discuss the laser’s beginnings; and Tony Siegman of Stanford University will present side notes on the history of the laser. The event takes place Sunday, May 16 (the actual 50th anniversary of the invention of the laser), in Ballroom A1.
- Local San Jose laser technician and enthusiast Bob Hess will display dozens of laser artifacts as part of the LaserFest Pavilion on the CLEO: Expo show floor. Hess will host demos of an early ruby laser system each day of CLEO: Expo.
- Mark Kasevich, a professor of physics at Stanford University and co-founder and consulting chief scientist for AOSense Inc. will speak at the CLEO Technology Transfer Program about how he successfully licensed a technology from a university and turned it into a commercial product. The program takes place Thursday, May 20 on the CLEO: Expo show floor.
- Steven Block of Stanford University and David Awschalom of the University of California at Santa Barbara are the featured keynote speakers at the CLEO/QELS Plenary Session Wednesday, May 19 at 8 a.m. in the San Jose Civic Center.
- CLEO/QELS will feature other speakers from California universities and companies, including Stanford University, Cal Tech, Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore National Lab, Coherent Inc., Newport Corp., Northrop Grumman, JDSU and others. See the conference program for more details on individual presentations.
ABOUT CLEO/QELS
With a distinguished history as the industry’s leading event on laser science, the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) / Quantum Electronics Laser Science Conference (QELS) is where laser technology was first introduced. In 2010, CLEO/QELS will unite the field of lasers and electro-optics by bringing together all aspects of laser technology, with content stemming from basic research to industry application. Sponsored by the American Physical Society’s (APS) Laser Science Division, the Institute of Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Photonics Society and the Optical Society (OSA), CLEO/QELS provides a holistic reflection of the critical developments in the field, showcasing the most significant milestones from laboratory to marketplace. With an unparalleled breadth and depth of coverage, CLEO/QELS connects all of the critical vertical markets in lasers and electro-optics.
