Jones and Zechman Claim Victories on Saturday Night at SSP

 

Newberrytown, PA (May 15, 2010) - The 2009 SSP Late Model Track Champion and Shermansdale resident, Jake Jones became the first repeat winner in the 20-lap Late Model feature on Saturday night, May 8 at the Susquehanna Speedway Park after starting in ninth place starting spot.  Randy Zechman of Littlestown claimed his second 2010 Street Stock feature with Etter's Andrew Frye winning his first XSC Elite feature of the season.   Donnie Broderick of Lancaster continued his win streak in the Xtreme Stock Car class with his sixth straight victory.  Lucas Montgomery of York claimed the Legends Cars victory as Daryl Sipe of York Haven won the 10-lap Mini Van feature.

 

On the start of the 20-lap Late Model feature, a multi-car accident in turn one claimed rows two, three, four and half of row five.  With many of the top contenders for the feature retired from the event, Jake Jones and Justin Ehrhart moved closer to the front when the event was restarted.   Tommy Slanker, grabbed the early lead on the restart from the pole position, with Jones quickly jumping into the runner-up spot.  As Slanker commanded the first four circuits, a wild scramble behind him ensued between Jones, Ehrhart and Kyle Saylor.  On lap five, Ehrhart went from third to first on the high side.  The next circuit saw a three-wide battle for the lead coming out of turn two, but a caution flew as the trio entered turn three.  During the caution, Slanker retired from the battle with mechanical failures.  Jones inherited the lead on the lap six restart, now with Saylor and a hard charging Kyle Saylor now on his tail.  Ehrhart restarted fourth.

 

Jones continued to lead through the middle part of the race as Saylor and Baer battled for the runner-up spot.  Contact between Baer and Saylor slowed the field on lap 12 with both drivers being sent to the rear.  Now with Ehrhart in second, he challenged Jones, but was unable to mount a successful pass as Jones won by five car lengths at the end.  Ehrhart finished second with D.J. Groft claiming the third spot.   Gary Potts and Jason Rochelle rounded out the top five.  John Baker Jr., Alex Updegraff and Carl Billet scored the heat race wins.

 

Ed Richards grabbed the lead at the start of the Street Stock 20-lapper and had pressure from 2009 Street Stock Track Champion Scott Thunberg immediately.  Thunberg grabbed the lead on the next circuit with Randy Zechman in pursuit.  With a few cautions, during the event, Zechman was unable to make the pass.  On lap 19, Thunberg went high in turn two and came to a stop on the backstretch.  This handed the lead to Zechman for a one lap shoot-out between him and Doug Bennett.  On the restart, Brian Hauenstein and Jim Palm Jr. were able to get by Bennett to follow Zechman across the finish line in second and third.  Bennett finished fourth and Brett Pickel claimed fifth.  Palm, Zechman and Bennett were the heat race victors. 

 

Andrew Frye battled by Patrick McClane on the fifteenth lap to win his first XSC Elite feature event Patrick McClane continued to pressure but settled for second at the end.  Early leader, Brent Hake was scored in third, followed by Jason Failor and JEf Keefer.  Travis Horan was the heat race victor.  

 

Donnie Broderick may have won his sixth straight Xtreme Stock Car victory of the season, but it was by far the most difficult to pull off this season.  David Goode Sr. led the first circuit with Jimmy Jesmer Jr. taking command on the second lap.  With action throughout the field, Larry Landis took the lead on lap 10 with Jason Failor moving into the lead on lap 15.  During this time, tim Hahn was always in the mix, but could not claim the top spot.  Broderick, starting ninth, used his patience and experience to remain in the race until the end when he made his move on lap 18 to go from third to first.  Broderick held on for the win with Failor in second and Hahn claiming third.  Jesmer followed in fourth and Landis rounded out the top five.  Adam Smith, Failor and Broderick won their respective heat races.

 

Racing action returns to the SSP Outback Track on Friday night, May 21 at 7:30 p.m. featuring quarter midget, kart and Adult Speedcar racing action.

 

Racing action returns to the Big Track at SSP on Saturday night, May 22 with 56th Anniversary Racer/Old-Timer's Reunion featuring the Late Models, Street Stocks, Xtreme Stock Cars, PENNMAR Vintage Cars and Road Warriors. 

 

Then on Sunday, May 23, the second round of the King of the Hill Series will include the Super Late Models, Legends Cars and XSC Elite divisions with a 6:00 p.m. starting time.

The Next Wednesday Night Test & Tune is on May 19

 

 

The next Wednesday Night Test & Tune session will be held on Wednesday, May 19 at the Susquehanna Speedway Park.  It is open to any type of racecars capable of competing on the 4/10 mile oval.  The cost is $12.00 per person for pit passes and a $20.00 fee for each racecar entering the pit area ($32.00 per car & driver combination).  Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. with open track time from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. by class.  Each session will be 6 - 8 laps per session.  The grandstands are open free to the public.  Each class will receive 4 to 5 rounds of 6/8 laps each or more if time permits.  The fuel pumps from Miller's Racing Parts will not be open.  Anyone needing fuel should contact Miller's Racing Parts directly at 717-766-0181.  The main concession stand will be open throughout the night. 

 

Also on Wednesday night, there will an open practice session for quarter midgets and karts at the Outback Track from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. under the lights.  The gates will open at 5:30 p.m. with open practice from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  The cost will be $20.00 per driver with no charge for anyone else entering the grandstand and "cold pit" areas.  All Outback Track participants should enter the pits from the Kise Mill Road entrance behind turn 2 of the "Big Track."

- Repeat Fan Discount Continues for 2010 - The popular "Repeat Fan Discount" program will continue at SSP in 2010.  There is a $2.00 repeat fan discount for each person with a ticket stub from races during the previous week's events completed only.  Returning fans are encouraged to write their name, address and phone number on the back of the stub to be entered into special drawings during and at the end of the season for great prizes.  The Repeat Fan Discount is not valid for pit pass purchases.
