Sitting Seventh on Friday, Anderson Looks for Answers in Atlanta
Event: Summit Racing Equipment Southern NHRA Nationals
Location: Atlanta Dragway, Commerce, GA
Day/Date: Friday, May 14, 2010
Qualifying for the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals got underway on Friday with 23 Pro Stock teams looking to earn one of sixteen positions in Sunday’s final eliminations field. It was not an easy assignment, however, as the hot and humid conditions robbed the factory hot rods’ naturally-aspirated engines of valuable horsepower. In each of the two sessions, Greg Anderson made a representative run in his Summit Racing Pontiac, with his best effort of 6.667-seconds at 207.08 mph slotting him in the seventh position midway through qualifying.
However, having captured the No. 1 qualifying position in six of his last nine races at Atlanta Dragway, Anderson was far from satisfied with his performance. This concern was further compounded by the fact that their difficulties remained in the same area of the track, with his KB Racing stablemate Jason Line also struggling in the first 330 feet. Even so, the three-time Atlanta winner looked to turn his frustration into motivation to find the solution prior to Saturday’s final two qualifying sessions.
“The early part of run continues to give us problems,?? stated Anderson. “It’s an issue that affects all of us, with my Summit Racing Pontiac just getting away with it better than Jason or Ronnie’s cars (Anderson’s brother-in-law Humphrey, who is campaigning a leased KB Racing entry). We’re not shaking the tires here as we had been earlier, but we’re also not making good runs, which means we’re leaving a lot on the table.
“It’s certainly frustrating, but we’re not about to give up. We have two more runs tomorrow to get this car figured out, so we can be aggressive in the tune-up and start running as well as we should. We have a lot of people here from Summit pulling for us, and we certainly don’t want to disappoint them.??
