HSR Historic Racing Doubleheader at Road America
Historic Racing Doubleheader at Road America
The Vintage GT race this weekend at historic Road America will feature the top cars and competitors from both the Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) and Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) series.
More than 200 cars and drivers are expected to compete in a wide variety of historic race cars from the 1950’s through early 2000’s.
Friday’s qualifying day will be capped by the Badger 200, a 50-lap race with two required pit stops, for production and GT cars that range from 1950s-era sports production cars through recent racers from the IMSA series.
Saturday’s main event is the Dairyland 150, covering 38 laps and two pit stops. Sports racers, prototypes and open-wheel formula cars will be competing.
Nine races for various makes of similar engine size will race in sprint races Sunday beginning at 10:30 a.m. after final qualifying races. Saturday’s action will feature qualifying races for all classes.
In addition to action on the track, there will be an infield vendor’s alley, car corrals and swap meet.
Fans also will enjoy the SVRA Party Saturday night, hosted by Red Morgan in the Road America Center at 6:30 p.m.
The Vintage GT is the third stop on the 2010 HSR schedule after successful runs at Sebring and Road Atlanta earlier this spring.
This is the first combined event for the two sanctioning bodies. SVRA features cars mainly from the 1950’s-1970’s with some exceptions for former Indy Light cars, as an example.
HSR offers a broader spectrum with sports cars and production racers from the 1950’s and later with an emphasis on the 1980’s through early 2000’s, which includes historic NASCAR stock cars, GTP/WSC and early Daytona prototypes.
With more than 200 competitors expected, there will be racing for fans of nearly every make and model from the past.
Road America, which started hosting races in 1955, poses a challenge to the drivers and machines. The 14-turn, 4-mile course features the famous “Kink?? and the nearly mile-long back straight before returning to the pit area. The track has seen many different series compete through the years, including Indy Cars, go-karts and motorcycles and will host the NASCAR Nationwide Series for the first time later this summer.
