Zipcar Expands Global Car Sharing Network to Scotland
Edinburgh, and soon Glasgow, will have access to cost effective and convenient alternative to car ownership
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., May 14 -- Zipcar, Inc., the world's largest car sharing company, announced today it has expanded its global car sharing network to Scotland through Streetcar Limited, which it acquired last month. Beginning today, a total of 10 vehicles will be available in four areas of Edinburgh. Next week, service will begin in Glasgow. The service will operate as Streetcar until the transition to the Zipcar brand is completed later this year.
"The ability to grow was a key reason to bring together Zipcar and Streetcar, and we're pleased to add a new country to our growing global network," said Scott Griffith, Chairman and CEO of Zipcar. "Residents of Glasgow and Edinburgh will be able to benefit from the cost savings and convenience of car sharing, and soon will have access to our network in England, the U.S. and Canada."
Coupled with strong public transport in both Scottish cities, Zipcar's service will provide a cost-effective, convenient, and environmentally friendly option for residents looking for alternatives to owning a car.
Car sharing provides significant benefits to local residents, communities and the environment. For residents, Zipcar helps reduce parking demand and congestion, as studies have shown each Zipcar takes between 15 and 20 personally owned vehicles off the road. In addition, members report driving 40 percent fewer miles and increasing public transit use by nearly 20 percent, helping to reduce traffic congestion and emissions in their communities. Best of all, the average Zipcar member reports saving more than $600 (USD) per month on transportation costs.
Zipcar vehicles are available by the hour or by the day to members, who can reserve a car via phone, online or a mobile device. A simple hourly fee includes parking in the reserved spot, gas, insurance, 180 free miles and 24/7 roadside assistance.
