Kimmel
Earns a Come-From-Behind 11th-Place Finish at Talladega
TALLADEGA, Ala. (April 24, 2010)- Frank Kimmel overcame two pit
road penalties and an equalized tire to score an 11th-place finish
at Talladega Superspeedway in the Talladega ARCA 250 Friday afternoon.
Rookie
driver, Dakota Armstrong led the 42-car field to the green flag for 250 milesof
ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX andMenards action. Kimmel, who started 23rdafter
struggling to find speed in his No. 44 Ansell/Menards Ford Fusion in
qualifying, maintained his position in the field until bad luck struck only 13
laps into the 94-lap event.
Kimmel
radioed to crew chief, Bill Kimmel Jr. that he had a bad vibration and was
forced to pit road for an unscheduled pit stop on lap 13 to change four
tires. Unfortunately, that was not the
end of Kimmel's bad luck as he was caught for speeding on both entry and exit
of pit road. The flat tire and penalties
put Kimmel back to 33rd position, one lap down to the leaders.
It didn't
take long for the Kimmel to get his No. 44 Ford Fusion back on the lead
lap. He radioed to his Ansell/Menards
team that the car was running pretty good, especially from the middle of the corners
off, and was able to stay with the leaders to earn the lucky dog only 10 laps
after the unscheduled stop put him a lap down.
"I am
disappointed that we had a tire equalize at the start of the race," explained
Kimmel Jr. "I think that getting the lucky dog went as well you could expect it
to. It might have been the best thing
that could have happened to us because it put us in the back, and we missed the
big wreck that happened in front of us."
After
receiving the lucky dog, Kimmel Jr. called his driver down pit road to top off
on fuel and sent him back out on the track in 25th position. It didn't take long
for Kimmel to power his
Ansell/Menards Ford through the field, working his way to the sixth position in
only 15 laps before being shuffled back to 20th just two laps later.
The melee
began on lap 50, as an eight-car wreck occurred right in front of Kimmel. With some
great driving, Kimmel barely
squeezed through the wreck. "Our spotter,
Tony Hirschman, and Frank did a pretty remarkable job missing that wreck," said
crew chief Bill Kimmel Jr.
Kimmel
brought his Ansell/Menards Ford down pit road for the final time, during the
caution on lap 51. He took fuel only and went back to the track in sixth
position. After the restart on lap 58,
Kimmel quickly moved into the top-five and never looked back from there.
Kimmel
remained in the top-five for the next 33 laps before the field started getting
racy, with only three laps remaining. Stuck on the inside lane, the outside line
hooked up, and Kimmel got
shuffled back to 11th place when the checkered flag flew.
"I am really
excited about how good the car ran during the race," explained Kimmel. "We ran
in the top-five and top-10 pretty much all day and just got shuffled there at
the end. I hung with the bottom, and it
didn't work out for us so we ended up 11th. I am disappointed by our finish, but
I am
happy with the way the race went. We
just have to get a faster race car, that's what we have to work on."
The ARCA
Racing Series will enjoy a few weeks off before heading to Toledo Speedway
short track racing action in the Menards 200 on Sunday, May 23.
