Bosch Earns Automotive News PACE(TM) Award for Innovation Partnership

Recognized in the Innovation Partnership Category for Collaboration on the Can-Am Spyder

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., April 13 -- -- Bosch Engineering and Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. received
one of four innovation partnership awards
-- Vehicle Stability System (VSS) is the first stability system designed
and engineered specifically for a three-wheeled vehicle

Bosch received an Automotive News PACE(TM) Award on April 12, at the 2010 Premier Automotive Suppliers Contributions to Excellence (PACE(TM)) Awards program for its innovative collaboration.

The company earned an award for its partnership with Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. (BRP) in developing the VSS for the three-wheeled Can-Am Spyder. In addition, Bosch was named a finalist for its Long Range Radar Generation 3 and VSS in the category product Europe.

"Bosch is committed to innovation, so much so, that on average we file for 15 patents each work day worldwide," said Peter Marks, chairman, president and CEO, Robert Bosch LLC. "Receiving a PACE(TM) Award, which recognizes innovation, technological advancement and business performance, is an honor for the Bosch team.

"Products like the VSS and LRR3, demonstrate Bosch's industry leading capabilities and dedication to bringing advanced safety technologies to market cost competitively. Not only do these safety technologies help save lives, they also offer increased vehicle performance and driver convenience," Marks added.

VSS is the Only Stability Control System for Three-Wheeled Vehicles

VSS is the industry's first, and only, electronic vehicle stability control system designed and developed specifically for a three-wheeled vehicle.

Working with BRP, Bosch Engineering developed a sophisticated vehicle dynamic control system for a three-wheeled vehicle, that integrates traction control and the full-wheel antilock brake system (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution and anti-rollover functionality. The system analyzes motion forces and automatically intervenes if necessary; this includes reducing engine torque and independently applying brakes to each wheel if the inner front wheel is in danger of lifting off the ground during aggressive maneuvers.

The Vehicle Stability System was developed in partnership with BRP and branded VSS for the three-wheeled Can-Am Spyder, which launched in North America in 2007. Bosch and BRP worked closely to integrate Bosch's stability control systems expertise with BRP's light-weight recreational vehicle knowledge to achieve maximum vehicle stability and drivability.

"VSS for a three-wheeled vehicle uniquely demonstrates Bosch's expertise in understanding and adapting advanced safety systems," said Keith Andrews, regional president, Bosch Engineering North America. "This innovation is an extension of Bosch expertise that brought a new concept to market and further secures Bosch's position as a leader in stability control.

"It was exciting to be part of a team that developed a new category of on-road vehicle," Andrews said. "Consumers have responded favorably to this vehicle that offers the fun and performance of a motorcycle with the added peace-of-mind provided by VSS, all packed in the three-wheel design."
