Jeg Coughlin Jr / Pre-race Notes
NHRA Las Vegas Nationals
The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
Las Vegas, Nev. (April 16-18)
Jeg Coughlin Jr. enters this week’s NHRA Las Vegas Nationals as the
fifth-ranked driver in the NHRA Full Throttle Pro Stock standings. At the most
recent event in Baytown, Texas, Jeg won his 62nd NHRA national event title
(49th in Pro Stock) when he defeated Allen Johnson in the final. Jeg has now
won at least one NHRA Pro Stock event in 12 of the last 14 seasons.
Jeg is also the defending event winner of the spring Las Vegas race. Last
year, he defeated Greg Stanfield in the final round to take the second of
his seven wins during the 2009 season. All told, Jeg has five Pro Stock wins
at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He won three straight titles from
2000-2002 and also earned titles in 2008 and 2009.
In 17 career appearances at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Jeg has
a round win record of 35-11 in Pro Stock competition.
Jeg Coughlin is a four-time NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Pro Stock
champion. He earned season titles in 2000, 2002, 2007 and 2008. As a
sportsman driver, Jeg also claimed the NHRA Super Gas championship in 1992.
In 2009, Jeg enjoyed one of his best years as a professional racer winning
seven of 23 events and reaching the final round in two others. He compiled
a round-win record of 50-17, the second best record in the class.
With 49 career Pro Stock wins, Jeg ranks fourth all-time among Pro Stock
drivers. Only Warren Johnson (96), Bob Glidden (85) and Greg Anderson (60)
have more titles.
Jeg Coughlin has previously been featured along with other NHRA champions
in a special edition set of $5 and $25 gaming chips that were issued by the
Palms Hotel and Casino. He is one of just four drag racers to be honored in
this manner.
Jeg has been the No. 1 qualifier in Pro Stock 16 times in his career
including the 2007 and 2008 Las Vegas events. Jeg has qualified in the top half
of the field in 11 of his 17 starts in Las Vegas and his average qualifying
position at this event is No. 7.
In 265 career Pro Stock races, Jeg has reached the final round 78 times,
recording 49 wins. Including his 13 sportsman victories, Jeg has won a total
of 62 times, good for ninth place on NHRA’s all time wins list. During his
career, Jeg has appeared in 95 final rounds, 77 as a professional and 18 as
a sportsman racer.
Jeg is ranked No. 4 in the K&N Horsepower Challenge standings. The K&N
Challenge is a special event that will take place in Norwalk, Ohio on June 26.
It is a special $50,000 to win event that is open only to the top eight
Pro Stock racers based on their qualifying performance over the previous year.
Jeg will be doing double duty in Las Vegas as he also plans to drive his
JEGS.com dragster in the Super Comp class. Jeg has won national event titles
in Pro Stock, Comp, Super Stock, Super Gas and Top Dragster, but not in
Super Comp. If he were to win, he would become the first NHRA racer to win in
six different categories.
During his Pro Stock career, Jeg has recorded 443 round wins while
incurring just 203 losses. He has failed to advance past the opening round just 60
times.
In Las Vegas, the JEGS team will continue to promote the JEGS “Win this Car
