VON SMITH EYES HOUSTON VICTORY FOR BARWA RACING

(4-9-10) OAK RIDGE, Tennessee – Heading into the second of ten races on the 2010 Get Screened America NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series, Von Smith and the Barwa Racing Pro Modified team are ready to get back to business as usual on the quarter-mile at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals in Houston this weekend.

While the Barwa Racing team is making its official return to NHRA Pro Mod competition after being absent in 2009, Smith and crew chief Howard Moon have seen their fair share of success on drag racing’s biggest stage – Moon earning 16 wins in 20 final rounds as a crew chief while Smith, in his debut season on the tour, reached the final round in his first four career events, winning in Dallas and Las Vegas.

After a successful test session, Smith and the Barwa Racing anticipate a breakout performance in Houston.

“More than anything, it has taken us a little time to get reacclimate ourselves to quarter-mile, legal Pro Mod racing,” said Smith, checking in via cell phone en route to Houston Raceway Park after a private test session near Dallas, Texas. “We knew it was going to take a little time, especially after racing the last two years with an outlaw program over the eighth-mile, but we’re really happy and excited after the performance we saw out of our Barwa Racing ’68 Camaro the last few days.

“We tried some new things in testing and I feel like we’re going into Houston as well prepared as we could be. It’s still such a thrill for this entire team to be back competing in the NHRA and it’s our hope to establish ourselves as a frontrunner this weekend. It’s a fast track and the conditions are generally favorable for big performances, so I’m sure it’s going to be a barnburner.

“Honestly, I can’t wait to get on the track, let out of the clutch and start grabbing gears at Houston Raceway Park.”

The Barwa Racing Pro Modified team will take to the track this weekend, starting with the opening two rounds of qualifying for the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas on Friday, April 9th, with a final session slated for Saturday afternoon and Round 1 of eliminations that evening. Final eliminations will get underway on Sunday the 11th at 11:00 AM.
