NHRA believed it was onto something great when it started the Pro Stock
Truck category in 1998 but less than four years later the announcement came
down that the class would be shelved at the end of 2001. The controversial
decision put a premium on the final stretch of Pro Stock Trucks races as
everyone in the category vied for the last few Wallys up for grabs.
JEGS.com truck racer Mike Coughlin had come into his own in his Chevy S-10
and had five national event victories to his credit -- including two at
the U.S. Nationals -- when the final race in the class came together at Auto
Club Raceway in Pomona. Coughlin usually is a pretty quiet guy but even the
soft-spoken Ohioan let it be known he wanted that last trophy as much as
any he'd raced for before.
It wasn't going to be easy and Coughlin knew it, yet he still managed to
take down class heavyweights Craig Eaton, John Lingenfelter, Todd Patterson,
and Greg Stanfield on the final day of the season to earn a permanent
place in the history books.
