American Axle & Manufacturing Launches South American Axle Business for Volkswagen AG

DETROIT, March 30 -- American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings, Inc. (AAM), which is traded as AXL on the NYSE, today announced that it has begun supplying rear axles for Volkswagen AG's 2010 Amarok, a new double cab pickup that has initially launched for the South American market.

The Amarok incorporates AAM's all-new high-efficiency axle, TracRite® Electronic Locking Differential (ELD), along with AAM's chassis-mounted locking differential electronic control module. The axles will be manufactured at AAM's Araucaria Manufacturing Facility in Brazil and shipped to Volkswagen AG's Pacheco plant near Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The open differential and ELD axles are evolutions of well developed and proven AAM axle technology. They feature an all-new ring gear diameter, hypoid offset, axle housing and next generation wheel end bearings. These products incorporate AAM PowerDense® and PowerLite® technologies that provide industry-leading efficiency and mass optimization. AAM's light weight, compact TracRite® ELD allows a driver to quickly lock a vehicle's wheels for improved traction on and off road. It offers scalable high-torque capacity, low electrical power and actuation that can be programmable, driver selectable, or both, and is compatible with ABS braking.

"We are extremely pleased to be supplying this important new vehicle program which recognizes our capabilities in designing and manufacturing premier driveline and chassis systems for the global market," said AAM President & Chief Operating Officer David C. Dauch. "This program expands AAM's product portfolio and supports our strategy of diversifying our customer base."

AAM is a world leader in the manufacture, engineering, design and validation of driveline and drivetrain systems and related components and modules, chassis systems and metal-formed products for trucks, sport utility vehicles, passenger cars and crossover utility vehicles. In addition to locations in the United States (Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana), AAM also has offices or facilities in Brazil, China, Germany, India, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Poland, South Korea, Thailand and the United Kingdom.
