Anderson & Crew Keep Working, Qualify Fifth in Charlotte
Event: Inaugural NHRA 4-Wide Nationals
Location: zMAX Dragway, Concord, NC
Day/Date: Saturday, March 27, 2010
Qualifying for the 4-Wide Nationals in Concord, NC, proved to be quite a challenge for Summit Racing driver Greg Anderson. After struggling with the unusual downhill configuration of the starting line during Friday’s opening attempts, his efforts were thwarted by a malfunctioning timing system on his opening attempt on Saturday morning, leaving him with one final opportunity to guarantee his spot in Sunday’s field, finding himself outside the top sixteen as he rolled to the line.
Fortunately, he quickly allayed any concerns, blazing through the quarter-mile in 6.570-seconds with a national record top speed of 212.46 mph to secure the fifth starting position, his best qualifying performance in three attempts at zMAX Dragway, and highest starting spot in this season’s four races.
“There was certainly a little bit of pressure on that last run, but fortunately we were able to detune the car enough to get off the multi-level starting line here,?? said Anderson. “It’s been giving a lot of the Pro Stock Cars fits in the early part of the run, which is a crucial area for us. I know it’s the same for everybody, but it would have been nice to see how fast these cars could run given the near-perfect atmospheric conditions we had today.
“Still, we did what we needed to. We slowed the car down a bunch so we could make it through low gear and put a good number on the board. It was great to run that speed, because it shows we have the power. We’ll scratch on it a bit tomorrow, keeping in mind that if we get too greedy, we might have to abort the run, which we just can’t have. We’ll just have to put a couple good, consistent runs together so we get into the final and do what we can to take home the trophy. It’s been a stressful weekend so far for Summit Racing, but I believe we learned something on that last run, which we hope to put it to good use tomorrow. I believe we should be able to go a little faster.??
