MCCLENATHAN HOLDS ON TO NO. 1 IN CONCORD
CONCORD, N.C. (March 27, 2010) - Driving the FRAM Top Fuel Dragster, Cory
McClenathan held on to the No. 1 spot through two more qualifying sessions
today at the Inaugural NHRA Four-Wide Nationals, collecting his second No. 1
of the season and the 35th of his career.
His final two attempts today produced a 6.767-second lap at 86.45 mph and a
3.810/319.82. No other driver bettered his track-record-setting 3.790/315.93
from yesterday.
He will face Brandon Bernstein, Rhonda Hartman-Smith and Morgan Lucas in the
opening round of Sunday's eliminations, racing four lanes wide.
"I think we have a car that they're going to have to step up a little bit to
beat," said McClenathan, defending event champion. "We've had that same car
all year long. We've either gone out and really shined or we've taken
somebody for granted and we shouldn't have and then it bit us.
"This thing ran really good," he said of the final pass, "and Todd (Okuhara,
co-crew chief) looked at me, [and said] 'We're going to try to run .79
again.' I thought that was a little gutsy, but he laughed and said 'If it
doesn't feel right shut it off.'
"I'm happy with the .81 flat. I think that's a great number, a perfect
package for tomorrow. Looks like we're going four-wide in the morning and it
will be very interesting. I've heard a lot of feedback from the fans, all
positive, and that's a good thing."
