JEGS Cajun SPORTSnationals means good times and great racing
BELLE ROSE, La. (March 18-21) – The party in Louisiana that began with the
New Orleans Saints Super bowl victory and continued through Mardi Gras,
will continue this weekend as No Problem Raceway Park in Belle Rose plays host
to the sixth annual JEGS NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals.
Racers in nine separate eliminations; Comp, Super Stock, Stock, Super
Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Top Dragster, Top Sportsman and Motorcycle, will
compete for a share of more than $50,000 in cash and contingency awards at
the event, which has annually become a highlight for sportsman racers
across the country. Jet car and Top Fuel Harley-Davidson exhibition runs are
also on the schedule.
Last year’s champions include Tommy Phillips, who won the Super Comp and
Super Gas titles, as well as Kevin Self (Comp), Brad Zaskowski (Super
Stock), Austin Williams (Stock) Mike DeSio (Super Street), Jeffrey Barker (Top
Sportsman), Casey Spradlin (Top Dragster), and Alex Barmettler (Motorcycle).
While the JEGS SPORTSnationals races annually feature some of drag racing’
s best sportsman drivers, the on-track action is just part of what attracts
more than 500 competitors. No Problem Raceway Park track operator Pat
Joffrion and his staff have created a fun-filled environment that includes
several racer appreciation activities including a popular crawfish boil, which
features a generous sampling of the local fare and much good camaraderie
among competitors. The busy schedule will also feature the popular class
eliminations for Super Stock and Stock competitors as well as Shootout races
for the top qualifiers in Top Dragster and Top Sportsman and the King of the
Bayou races for drivers in Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.
The champions who are crowned at this weekend’s Belle Rose event will also
have the inside track to win the coveted JEGS Crown award. The JEGS Crown
is a specially made handcrafted trophy that can be won only by winning two
of the three JEGS SPORTSnationals events in a calendar year. The other
events are the JEGS NHRA Pacific SPORTSnationals at Auto Club Dragway in
Fontana, Calif. (May 14-16) and the JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals at
National Trail Raceway in Columbus, Ohio (Sept. 24-26). Thus far, just one
competitor, Pro Mod racer Mike Ashley, has captured the JEGS Crown trophy.
NHRA reintroduced SPORTSnationals seven years ago at No Problem Raceway
Park to rave reviews from racers and spectators. Prior to that, NHRA had
hosted the SPORTSnationals from 1974 to 1986 at a trio of tracks, Beech Bend
Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Ky. (1974-80, 1985-86), the old Houston Int'l
Raceway (1981-82), and O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis (1983-84). For
