Anderson Qualifies 6th, Looks to Put Both Halves Together in Gainesville

The second day of qualifying at the Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals produced mixed results for Summit Racing Pontiac driver Greg Anderson.  After shaking the tires on his only attempt during Friday’s rain-shortened action at Gainesville Raceway, he came into the day still looking to earn a spot in Sunday’s final eliminations field.  As if this were not enough, the first round on Saturday would also act as the resumption of the postponed Arizona Nationals, with Anderson facing rival Mike Edwards, who has been the quickest car in the class this season.
 
Racing in the left-hand lane, Anderson gained the advantage at the starting line by a hundredth of a second and posted a solid 6.569-second time with the top speed of the category at 211.86 mph.  Although it was unfortunately not enough to hold off his opponent’s 6.537-second charge, which was the quickest of the round, it did earn the three-time champion the sixth starting position for the next day’s race, which, combined with his teammate Jason Line’s overcoming issues of his own to make his way into the field on his final attempt, left him satisfied but looking for more.
 
“We certainly had our share of suspense today,�?? said Anderson.  “We started the day with two of our three cars (including Anderson’s brother-in-law Ronnie Humphrey, who is driving a leased KB Racing Pontiac) not in the show.  After the morning session, we still had Jason’s car not in with only one chance left, which is not a very comforting feeling, and not something we are used to doing here at the Summit Racing team, without a doubt.  We’re used to doing more, so today’s performance did not set well with us at all.
 
“However, we kept our cool and made the right changes and got everyone safely qualified.  We’re not at the top where we’d like to be, but we have solid cars, and although we’re not yet making good runs, we’re still running pretty well.  We’re off a little in the early part of the racetrack, which is our Achilles ’ heel, but the good news is that our motors are working well, and we have top speed so far.  
 
 “We know the potential is there, we just need to nail the set-up on the first part of the racetrack.  We seem to keep missing on one side or the other of the clutch, and we’re either spinning the tire too much or not enough.  We have to hit that bulls-eye better, and hopefully we’ll do it tomorrow. We know the back half of the track will be there, we just have to work on the front half.  We’re not as stressed as we were before that last session, so we’re going to get a good night’s rest, and study our notes so we can make the right moves tomorrow.�??
