Line Rebounds to Qualify Seventh in Gainesville
Event: 50th Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals
Location: Gainesville Raceway, Gainesville, FL
Day/Date: Saturday, March 13, 2010
Entering the third and final qualifying session at the Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals, Jason Line and the Summit Racing team knew they faced an uphill battle in defense of their win at this event from a year ago. After shaking the tires and shutting off early on their previous attempt on Saturday morning, (a run that had simultaneously ended their chances of winning the postponed Arizona race), they found themselves outside the field of sixteen for Sunday’s final eliminations at Gainesville Raceway.
Their assignment was further complicated by the fact that they would be the first car out that they would have to make their way into a field that was already the quickest in the category’s history and that conditions were not as optimum as they had been in the morning. However, none of this seemed to matter to the 2-time Gatornationals winner, who reeled off an impressive 6.570-second, 211.20 mph pass to claim the seventh starting spot, maintaining his streak of having qualified for every Pro Stock race he has entered in his career..
“That was probably as nervous as I have ever been,?? said a relieved Line afterwards. “I don’t like to be put in that situation, and I know this KB Racing team doesn’t like it either. It really shouldn’t have come down to that last session as it did, but it happens, and so far we’ve been lucky enough to get ourselves in the show every time.
“It all came down to just getting down the racetrack, something we hadn’t done in the first two sessions. Fortunately, we were able to make a nice safe run, which even though it wasn’t a great one, was good enough to qualify in the top half of the field, which is all that really mattered. The bottom line is that this Summit team pulled it together when they needed to, giving us a chance to race tomorrow, so we can try and defend our win from last year. It’s all good.??
