National event wins and world championships are the epitome of drag racing
success, but ask any Sportsman driver which individual race they want to
win the most and they will point to the annual Big Dog Challenge.
The special event for the top Sportsman racers in the country pays a
whopping $50,000 to the winner, a top prize that exceeds that of any single race
in the sport. As one might imagine, the huge payout brings out the very
best in the racers, which makes winning the big check one of the hardest
things to accomplish.
In 2005, decorated Pro Stock and Pro Mod veteran Troy Coughlin Sr., a
world champion himself, took his hot rod to Piedmont Dragway in North Carolina
and managed to survive the most grueling day of his career to top the sport
and earn the $50,000 "Big Dog" title. Among all of his accomplishments on
the drag strip, Coughlin still counts this particular win as the best of
his career.
