Anderson Advances to Second Round in Arizona,
Awaits Race Resumption in Florida
Event: Arizona NHRA Nationals
Location: Firebird Raceway, Chandler, AZ
Day/Date: Monday, February 21, 2010
Greg Anderson and the Summit Racing team faced a series of unusual challenges in Round 1 of Sunday’s final eliminations of the Arizona Nationals, as they would effectively be raced their own car. After qualifying ninth, the three-time champion would square off against his brother-in-law Ronnie Humphrey, who was driving the Pro Stock Pontiac which Anderson had campaigned for the majority of 2009, powered by a KB Racing engine.
In addition, he would also have to find a way to effectively navigate the very tricky left-hand lane. Finally, the start of the day was delayed by several hours due to persistent showers, lowering both the ambient and track temperatures. However, none of this mattered when Anderson rolled to the line, as he combined a .021 reaction time with the quickest time of the round in the left lane at 6.646 seconds to gain the win over Humphrey, who suffered severe tire shake almost instantaneously.
Although pleased with result, Anderson revealed that his run had been far from uneventful. Shortly afterward, with temperatures plummeting and the forecast calling for additional rain and cold on Monday, the NHRA postponed the remaining three rounds of Pro Stock eliminations until next month, when the race will be completed as part of qualifying for the Tire Kingdom Gatornationals in Gainesville, FL. It was a decision the KB Racing driver fully supported.
.
“I applaud the NHRA for moving the remainder of eliminations to our qualifying runs in Gainesville,?? said Anderson. “It was the right thing to do. For some reason these Pro Stock cars were an absolute handful on this race track.
“To be honest, I came as close to crashing on that first round run as I ever have, and was pretty apprehensive about the next three rounds. Therefore both I and my fellow Pro Stock competitors are extremely relieved and grateful to take my Summit Racing Pontiac home in one piece. I look forward to completing this event next month under better conditions.??
