Anderson Looks for Answers after Opening Arizona Qualifying in Fifth

Event: Arizona NHRA Nationals
Location: Firebird Raceway, Chandler, AZ
Day/Date: Friday, February 19, 2010

After spending two days testing in Las Vegas prior to arriving in the Valley of the Sun, Greg Anderson and the Summit Racing team went into the first day of qualifying for the Arizona NHRA Nationals cautiously optimistic about their chances. They got off to a good start, opening with the fifth-quickest time of the first session at 6.652-seconds with a top speed of 208.07 mph, which remained their run of record when their second attempt produced a 6.674-second elapsed time.

Entering the second and final day of qualifying in the fifth position Anderson admitted that his team’s toughest assignment would be dealing with what was proving to be a very inconsistent Firebird Raceway surface.
.
“After running that 6.65 in the first session, we made a few changes to improve our Summit Racing Pontiac for the second run, looking to take advantage of what we felt would be a better racetrack,?? said Anderson. “Unfortunately, something happened to the track between sessions, because the surface actually seemed to get worse, and I found myself fighting to maintain control.

“I’ve done this long enough to know it’s just not something wrong with the car, and I know we weren’t the only ones to have issues. More than anything, I really feel for Gordie (fellow competitor Rivera, who crashed his Pro Stocker during the second session) – I’m just happy he wasn’t hurt. However, we somehow need to come to grips with whatever process they are using to prep the track, and adapt our car accordingly. The bottom line is that we have two days to figure it out, and we definitely have the crew to do it.??
