HARTFORD MOTOR SPEEDWAY CONTINUES TO IMPROVE AS AN ASA MEMBER TRACK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
American Speed Association PR
DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Thursday, February 18, 2010) - All cylinders are running for
Jim Borden and his staff at Hartford Motor Speedway, an ASA Member Track located
 in Hartford, MI.  As he enters into his third season of owning the 5/8-mile clay
oval, he is thrilled with how the track has recovered to be one of the more successful
tracks in the United States.
"When I bought the racetrack we had about a 60-car count and the year before I bought
the track they had a weekly attendance of 300-500 people," Borden stated.  "We are
up to about a 100-car count and got 1300-1500 people a week in the stands.  When
 we have our bigger shows we get around 2500-3000 people and the fourth of July
we get between 5,000-6,000 people."
Borden knew he had a golden opportunity to revive a racetrack, and in two seasons
he is seeing his hard work pay off, "Hartford was a struggle before I bought it.
  We knew we had something there that we had bring back up.  Actually we're very
 happy with what is going on at Hartford.  We are not making any money yet, but
it is not costing us any money either.  It's paying its own bills," Borden exclaimed.
 "When I bought it, it was a five year deal.  And if it wasn't doing what I thought
it would do in five years, I will either sell it or do something else.  The first
year we had it, we bought it and did $50,000 in improvements and new equipment it
made almost all but $20,000 back the first year.  Last year, it paid off that $20,000
and supported itself for the rest of the year.  We now have our liquor license which
should bring in some extra revenue to the track."
For Borden, he is using common sense in making Hartford a success, "We are not getting
stupid by going out and putting on shows that cost $80,000 to get a series to come
in," he stated.  "We are doing our weekly show, got a couple Sunoco LMS shows and
three to four sprint car shows on the schedule this year.  We are not doing anything
risky that could put us out of business."
"Jim and his group at Hartford have done a wonderful job of reviving this great
racing facility," Dennis Huth, ASA President said.  "The track is located in a beautiful
part of Michigan and race fans who visit will say the same.  To see what they have
done in two seasons shows that short track racing is alive and can still be successful."
Their season gets underway with the second annual car show at Orchards Mall on April
22-24 with the season opener at the track on Friday, April 30th.
Listed as a half-mile clay oval, in Hartford, Michigan is really closer to a 5/8-mile
racetrack, Hartford Motor Speedway has had a long and unique history. First built
as a dirt track, it was paved in the 1970's. It then reverted back to a dirt track
in the 1980s, and even lay dormant for more than a decade. It seats 6500 for the
 regular Friday night program featuring UMP Late Models, UMP Modifieds, UMP Factory
Stock and UMP Pure Stock.
