Tata Motors, which is participating in a Government bid to supply almost 1,000 light bullet proof vehicles to the armed forces, on Tuesday announced the launch of a mine protected vehicle as part of its strategy to enhance the scope of its defence business.

“There are several other domestic companies also participating in the contract for supply of light bullet vehicles,” a senior Tata official said. While not commenting on the value of the Government contract, officials indicated that each light bullet proof vehicle produced by the Group costs about Rs 35 lakh.

The newly launched mine protected vehicle is based on modular flexibility, offering three doors for faster and easier exit in emergency situations, but also an air-conditioned cabin and nine firing ports.

The vehicle can attain a maximum speed of 100 kmph and can be used as various variants including being a troop carrier, a command post or a battle field ambulance.

Meanwhile, the newly appointed Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Carl Peter Forster, said that he was really “enthused and excited” to work out of India with a successful Indian company with high business ethics in a very fast growing market.

“I am enthused by the opportunity of the Indian market and exports, growing the business out of the Indian market. It is early days I cannot talk about my plans. Most people get a hundred days plus minus some. So give me some time to understand the business even better,” he added.
