As a Division 3 competitor, historic Maple Grove Raceway in Pennsylvania's
Dutch Country always held a special place in Troy Coughlin's heart. Aside
from his home track of National Trail Raceway near Columbus, Ohio, Coughlin
is as familiar with "the Grove" as any place on tour.
So it was appropriate that he took his first national event victory there
when he won the Keystone Nationals in 2001.
Perhaps the best part of the weekend was the breakneck pace of the race
itself. Pro Stock put together its quickest elimination field ever at that
event and Troy's kid brother Jeg even set an NHRA national record for elapsed
time during the race. Simply put, everyone was running at their absolute
best that weekend and Troy was the one to come out on top, beating Kurt
Johnson, Tom Hammonds, reigning world champion Jeg Coughlin, and Tom Martino on
the day.
